North Bay looking at 2021 water and wastewater recommendations

North Bay city council is recommending the adoption of a more than $23.7-million operating budget for water and wastewater heading into next year. The decision by the council’s infrastructure and operations committee following two nights of discussions and recommendations from staff would see the budget increase by approximately $889,000, or 3.89 per cent, over 2020.
 

Sudbury’s HSN puts out guidelines on masks

Sudbury’s HSN has issued a notice about the type of masks that patients and care partners must wear when visiting any local health care location. In short, masks with built-in valves or ports are not allowed. While innovative in design, according to the hospital, they are designed to protect only the person wearing the mask by allowing one’s breath to be expelled in larger volumes outside the mask.
 

Legion Branch 23 launches Poppy Campaign

Legion Branch 23 in North Bay has launched this year’s Poppy Campaign. A table with poppy and a donation box has been set up in the front entrance of the North Gate Shopping centre ahead of Remembrance Day. The Legion says, with COVID-19, this is the only means to help veterans.
 

Canadore College looking at Mental Health initiative

Canadore College is rolling out a multi-year initiative when it comes to mental health. The three-year Student Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy looks at the effectiveness of current supports and new strategies as needed. The Student Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy will continue to be rolled out in the coming months and will run through the 2023-24 academic year.
 

Hearst declares a state of emergency

The Town of Hearst has declared a state of emergency. It happened on the weekend and in the wake of a streak of recent positive COVID-19 cases within the community. On Sunday, the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) reported one new COVID-19 case among residents in the health unit area.
 

Firefighters save a local cat following apartment fire

Greater Sudbury Fire Services are being thanked for working to save a cat rapped in this morning’s fire at an apartment building on King Street. After receiving medical attention, the cat was reunited with his owners. All other residents of the building were safe, and have been evacuated.

Winter parking bans are now in place

A parking reminder is going out to residents in North Bay. The community as many do every year has put their parking bylaw into place. Constable John Schultz says it’s enforced by both bylaw officers and Police. It’s all for snow removal. Overnight on-street parking bans are in effect Nov. 1 to April 15.
