Over 50 employees at HSN let go over COVID-19 vaccination policy

Fifty-three employees at Health Sciences North in Sudbury have lost their jobs. Allegedly, it was being non-compliant with the COVID-19 vaccination rules, that took effect on Nov. 1. HSN, at that point, made it mandatory for all current employees, credentialed professional staff, learners and volunteers to get the vaccine.
 

Red scarfs decorate North Bay’s downtown

North Bay’s downtown was adorned yesterday in red.  Red Scarfs tied to lamp posts. This year the AIDS Committee of North Bay & Area HIV – Hep C Services tied 192 scarves around lamp posts throughout the downtown core to recognize World AIDS day yesterday. Those who would like a scarf, may take one.
 

Jamieson Resort in Timmins getting ready for ski season

Snowmaking has begun at Mount Jamieson Resort in Timmins. Looking ahead, the hill says they expect to be as busy as ever. There seems to be a high demand for the chalets.  Once the season begins, COVID-19 protocols will be in effect throughout the resort. The resort is also moving forward with plans to become an all-season resort.
 

Algoma-Manitoulin MPP calling on the Province to up safety for area highways

Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha is calling on the Province to see highway safety increase. In short, he would like to see the province support a bill that would see northern highways, including Highway 17 and Highway 11, designated class 1 highways. By classifying them as such, it puts them into the same category as 400 series highways, meaning the snow must be removed within eight hours of the end of a snowfall.
 

Rainbow Board and PHSD seeing a drop in COVID-19 School cases

The Rainbow District School Board, along with Public Health Sudbury and Districts say the number of active COVID-19 cases at schools continues to drop. This is for schools within the Sudbury district specifically. A decreased was noted yesterday for the third day in a row down to 72 from just below 100.
 

Cassellhome welcomes Mendicino on the board

The Cassellholme home for the Aged Board in North Bay is once again getting a new representative from the City of North Bay.   Councillor Dave Mendicino is the fourth member of council to take on the role this year. He was voted in at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
 

District School Board Ontario North East re-acclaim Chair and Vice-Chair for another year

District School Board Ontario North East has elected a chair and vice chair for the next school year. The meeting was held this week. Bob Brush was acclaimed as chair of the board, and Dennis Draves was acclaimed as vice-chair. This is their fifth consecutive term together.
 

City of Greater Sudbury will run at 4.8% water rate hike for 2022

The city of Greater Sudbury will run a 4.8 percent water rate hike for 2022. This follows the defeat of a motion to reduce the water rates this week. Water is not included in the annual tax levy as it’s funded by user fees.
 

PHSD warning of Potential COVID-19 risk

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is advising of a potential high-risk exposure to COVID-19. It’s for anyone who attended a private gathering at Sheguiandah Roundhouse and Community Centre on Manitoulin Island from Nov 27 to 29. Anyone at that event should monitor for symptoms and contact the Health Unit.
 

Weather Advisories put out for Sault Ste Marie, Timmins

Sault Ste Marie residents need to keep one hand on the hat again this morning. Strong northwesterly winds are expected to develop this morning, with gusts of 70 to 80 km/h possible before tapering off this afternoon.
Meanwhile, for Timmins residents, a winter weather travel advisory is in effect. Total snowfall amounts of 8 to 14 cm are expected. Snowfall amounts will be reduced south of Earlton as precipitation is expected to fall in the form of rain at times this morning. Snow will gradually taper off this afternoon.
