Public Health orders Valley View Public School to close

Effective immediately, Public Health Sudbury & Districts has ordered Valley View Public School to close until further notice.  It’s all due to COVID-19 cases within the school community. All transportation to and from Valley View Public School is cancelled. All students from Valley View Public School will transition to remote learning from home. School staff will follow up with families to determine who requires technology.  Continuity of learning will be provided as seamlessly as possible.
 

Algoma Public Health announces one new death.

APH says one more death is being reported, due to COVID-19 for Dec. 8th. It is the 17th for the Algoma District. Out of respect for the family, no further information is being shared.
 

One person tests positive for COVID-19 at White Pines.

A letter from Algoma Public Health sent to parents and others involved with the school on Wednesday says the APH is conducting a careful investigation to identify close contacts, following a positive case of COVID-19 at White Pines school in Sault Ste Marie. Any low-risk and high-risk contacts will receive a letter providing further details from APH.  Those not considered close contact of the individual will not receive a letter.
 

Greater Sudbury Cubs Hockey Program shut down for now, due to COVID-19

Greater Sudbury Cubs have suspended all team activities. This is after a player tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, a number of games have been postponed.  Games on Dec. 9 and Dec. 11 are being rescheduled. Additional games are being reviewed.
 

Highway 11 reopens following a fatal collision

Highway 11 has reopened following a fatal collision. The accident happened around 6:30 pm yesterday near Papa John’s Road on Highway 11 south of Temagami. Early indicators say the crash was weather-related.

Aspin and Cochrane acclaimed at Board Chair, Vice-Chair

Near North, District School Board says Chair Jay Aspin and Vice-Chair John Cochrane have been acclaimed once again for another year. It happened at last night’s School Board meeting. The two have held positions since the fall of 2018. Aspin is entering his 21st year as a school board trustee.

11-people at North Bay city hall fired over failing to get vaccinated

The City of North Bay confirms 11 of its employees have been terminated. It’s in relation to a failure to comply with the city workplace COVID-19 vaccination policy. It city says it 95 percent of employees at the City of North Bay are fully vaccinated.
 

City of Timmins getting more from the Province for infrastructure

The City of Timmins’ is getting another boost from the province; $2.9 million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF). The funding is to help municipalities build and repair critical infrastructure —including roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.
 

DSSAB gets turned down following a request for geared-to-income housing

The federal government has turned down a request by the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board for funding for four geared-to-income housing projects in the region.  The four geared-to-income housing projects are under the Rapid Housing Funding program.  Currently, the monthly cost for a homeless individual to stay in a hospital bed is $10,900. The price drops slightly at the low barrier shelter on Chippewa Street to $9,524 per person every month and $5,596 per individual to stay for a month in the Gateway House, which is also referred to as transitional housing.
