More winter weather is on the way, says Environment Canada
More winter weather could be on the way. Called a “Wintery Mix” by environment Canada, up to 15 cm of snow is possible by Saturday evening in some locations. It’s all thanks to “a strengthening low-pressure system is forecast to track northeast across Lake Huron on Saturday.” This will result in precipitation to begin as snow tonight transitioning to periods of rain by Saturday morning, freezing rain may also occur.
Greater Sudbury Police appoint a new deputy chief
The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board has announced a new deputy chief. Inspector Sara Cunningham has 24 years with the Service, most recently as inspector of Strategic Operations and as Executive Officer to the Chief of Police. Her education includes a degree from Laurentian University.
Communication the focus of two townships
A meeting between Sundridge and Strong townships, has ended with both municipalities agreeing to improve communications. Sundridge Deputy Mayor Shawn Jackson introduced the motion on communications. Both councils agree that it is paramount for both municipalities to work together so they could provide the best leadership for both communities.
Road closure coming for highway 101
A road closure has been scheduled for this weekend. Highway 101 between Schumacher and South Porcupine will be closed Sunday, Dec. 12 in both directions for about 30 minutes at Rae Hill. It will happen at some point between 9 a.m. and noon, all to allow Hydro One to relocate wires. Police will be on-site to direct traffic.
COVID-19 Outbreak announced in Matheson
And a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Joseph H. Kennedy Public School in Matheson. The Porcupine Health Unit does not confirm how many cases are at the school, but contact tracing has been complete, and close contacts have been notified.
KED enters new hotel agreement Genesis
Sudbury’s Kingsway Entertainment District now has a hotel agreement. It is with Genesis Hospitality to build what the city calls a “flagship hotel”. Genesis Hospitality manages several different hotel brands located in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta, including Courtyard by Marriott, Clarion Hotel & Suites, Best Western, Residence Inn, Comfort Inn, and Hampton Inn.
Union taking on city over 11-fired employees
The city of North Bay has terminated 11 employees for failing to comply with a COVID-19 vacation policy and now the union representing those 11 employees, is fighting back. Local 122 has filed a policy grievance. They are pointing to the vaccination policy adopted by the North Bay Police Service as an alternative to termination.
THU declares COVID-19 Outbreak over
The Timiskaming Health Unit says an outbreak at St. Patrick Catholic School in Cobalt is over. The Health Unit says they have been working with representatives from Northeastern Catholic District School Board and St. Patrick Catholic School and took all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent transmission.
Mount Jamieson announces new technology for skiiers
Mount Jamieson Resort ahead of opening day tomorrow, they’re letter skiers know of a new feature. Those who want to hit the slopes will have to go through a newly installed gated system before getting onto the chair lifts. The system uses radio frequency identification technology to scan passes to automatically open the gates. Anyone who does not have a pass, won’t get through.
Security getting another look in Sault Ste Marie
Sault Ste Marie City Council will be asked early next week to talk changes related to downtown safety and security. The city’s deputy chief administrative officer is expected to ask councillors to issue a request for proposals for private security estimated to cost between $84,000 and $109,000. The Downtown Association has been paying about $18,000 a year for nightly patrols of Queen Street.
COVID-19 advisory issued for Thessalon
Algoma Public Health is reporting a low-risk COVID-19 exposure in Thessalon. It’s for Memorial Community Arena for a week ago, Friday, Dec. 3 between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Anyone who was there during that time is advised to self-monitor and contact the health unit with any symptoms.
