HSN putting measures in place in response to rising COVID-19 cases
Health Sciences North (HSN) is putting temporary measures to address what they call over-occupancy levels and sustain critical and acute care services. Evidently, they’re not alone. Algoma, Sudbury and Timiskaming public health unit areas are all seeing record numbers of active cases of COVID-19. Effective immediately, HSN is closed to acute care referrals from other hospitals for one week. HSN will work with referring hospitals to find alternatives to HSN for non-life and limb referrals.
Patients will be redirected to other hospitals within the North East and outside the region if necessary. There are currently 30 hospital patients waiting in the region for admission at HSN, 19 in cardiology.
No ice is safe ice – Temagami OPP
A Temagami man has passed away after the snowmobile he was riding crashed through thin ice on Lake Temagami. It happened near Bell Island just ahead of the weekend. Temiskaming OPP is reminding recreationalists that, especially this early in the season, no ice is safe ice.
Sault Ste Marie respond to garage fire
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a garage fire over the weekend, in the city’s east end. It happened Saturday just after 7 a.m. Thankfully a homeowner noticed the fire while on the way out the door with the family. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Maintenance outage is coming for two Greater Sudbury areas
Hydro One in Greater says a planned maintenance outage is on the way. It’s happening Tuesday, December 14th for the townships of Snider and Rayside. Tied to the relocation of a hydro line, it will last six hours, occurring between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and will affect approximately 955 customers. All customers that will be impacted by this planned maintenance have been contacted.
North Bay Police looking for suspects follow sign theft
The North Bay Police Service is looking for two suspects wanted for the theft of road signs. It took place in Callander last month. Two signs belonging to the Municipality of Callander were stolen near the Callander Community Centre on Swale Street. Security camera footage obtained by police shows one male and one female suspect in the area around the time of the incident.
Sault Ste Marie Police looking for a suspect following a case of mischief
Sault Ste Marie Police are looking for a suspected wanted for graffitiing a stairwell at an apartment complex on Chapple Avenue. Several security cameras were also spray-painted. It happened in the 0-100 block. Anyone with information should contact Police.
$800 coming to Greater Sudbury for Infrastructure
The city of Greater Sudbury has received an additional funding boost from the Province for infrastructure. $800k represents is on top of the $10 million coming for 2022 through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund. This is as the city works through budget deliberations, with a handful of big-ticket items contingent upon the city receiving outside funding.
Maple Syrup Festival is still a… maybe.
Those responsible for the Powassan Maple Syrup Festival is working through whether to hold the community’s annual event next spring. The issue? Public safety and COVID-19. The committee says they will get direction from town council. They hope to make a final decision by January 31st.
Some snow mobile trails starting to open in Cochrane
The Cochrane Polar Bear Riders Snowmobile Club has opened a number of trails for the snowmobile season. The first to open in the Province, it is roughly 20 km currently, plus a little more. More trails will hopefully open soon. The club will be grooming and getting signed agreements with landowners to allow trails to cut across their properties.
Traffic slowed after driver hits a poll
A portion of Northern Avenue was closed Saturday in Sault Ste Marie. This is after a single motor vehicle collision that involved one driver colliding with a pole on the southwest corner of the intersection. Two vehicles total were involved in the collision a the corner of Pine Street and Northern Avenue. Police directed traffic through the intersection while tow trucks removed the vehicles.
Crossing Guard decision up for discussion tonight
Sault Ste Marie City Council will be asked this evening, to decide the future of a crossing guard position. It’s at the Northern Avenue East and Sackville Road intersection. A crossing guard was temporarily assigned to the busy intersection two years ago in a study to determine whether a full-time guard was needed. The temporary is ongoing.
