All hands on deck during an early morning fire

It was all hands on deck this morning as North Bay Firefighters battled back ablaze and the cold… at a house fire on Worthington Street near Morris. The call came in just before 2 a.m. Fire crews, which included four pumper trucks, were still on the scene dousing hot spots around 6:15 a.m. The home appeared to have sustained serious fire damage.

Students are heading back to school Wednesday… as it stands right now

Students in Northern Ontario will be heading back to class Wednesday. That was the word from the Rainbow District School board and the Near North District School board in a letter home to parents. Preparations are underway for the return to school as health and safety measures announced last week by Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health are being put into place.
 

City of North Bay dropping one bag for garbage pick up

Garbage collection in North Bay is changing. All in an effort to extend the life of the Merrick Landfill site, the number of garbage bags for pickup per household is going down from three bags to two effective Jan. 1. Those wishing to drop additional bags at the curb can purchase bag tags from the city. Bags cannot weigh more than 35 lbs and containers cannot be more than 33ltrs.
 

High risk exposure issued by the PHU

The Porcupine Health Unit has issued notice of a potential high-risk public exposure to COVID-19. It was on an Ontario Northland bus that departed Timmins. The Ontario Northland bus from Timmins to Watershed departed at 9:10a.m, Dec. 27. Any passengers are advised to visit contact the health unit.
 

Rent increase will be held at 1.2% this year

Rent in the Province is going up again. The province says it has set its rent increase guideline for 2022 at 1.2 percent. The guideline is the maximum a landlord can increase a tenants’ rent during a year without the approval of the Landlord and Tenant Board.  That said, this year’s guideline is lower than 2020’s 2.2 percent increase.
 

Ontario Parks the thing to do in 2021

Ontario Parks campsites were quite the popular attraction in 2021 and they could be just as hard to book in 2022. There was a 13 percent increase in campers over 2020 or 706,000 additional reservations. Ontario Parks bookings open up five months in advance of your trip’s start date, as they try once again… to pitch the idea of camping out.
 

Woman with Wahnapitae First Nation connection heading to Games

A young lady with family connections Wahnapitae First Nation is heading to the games. 24-year-old Abby Roque living in Sault Ste Marie MI has been named to the US Women’s Olympic Hockey Team. A social media posting shared on the Wahnapitae First Nation Facebook page congratulated Roque on her achievement.
 

Timmins area trails open for 2022

Timmins sledders are being reminded that trails are open for the season. Stretching across the region this means just over 100 km that are available. Sledders are being advised to stay within 50kph. There is a number of marsh area that has yet to set into a deep freeze and sledders are advised to drive with care.
 

Application for NOSM for Summer Program open soon

Applications for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine will soon enough be open… for the Summer Studentship program. Students studying in health care disciplines are invited to submit applications from Feb. 1 to 15, 2022. The summer student program was established by Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to allow healthcare students the opportunity to gain work experience in their field of study.
 

Extreme Cold Warning issued for Kapuskasing and area

While it’s a chilly start to the week just about everywhere, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Kapuskasing – Hearst and Smooth Rock Falls. Minimum temperatures of -30 to -32 degrees Celsius are only the start as Wind chill values could make it feel like minus 40. Experts say Cover up and if you have a pet, keep them inside.
 

Police wrap up a snow mobile collision

Sudbury police have wrapped up their investigation into a snowmobile collision. It happened just ahead of the weekend. While there is no word as to the cause of the crash they do confirm it happened off-road, and one person was taken to Health Sciences North with what police call ‘ significant injuries ‘. A single snow machine and operator were involved in the crash.
