Emergency childcare in Greater Sudbury starts Monday

Licensed child-care centres across Greater Sudbury will be able to provide emergency childcare, Monday. The city says Emergency childcare services are meant to support essential workers not able to accommodate their school-aged child’s learning or care at home.
 

Rainbow Board annual report available online

Rainbow District School Board says their Annual Report is now available. Online for the 2020-2021 school year, it can be found on the board’s website. School boards are required to produce an Annual Report in accordance with The Education Act as a way to provide an overview of key activities undertaken to address strategic priorities.
 

ATV goes through the ice, driver without injury

An ATV driver is without injury after his vehicle went through the ice on Lake Temiskaming. OPP responded to the call. It happened a short distance from shore at Carter’s Pit in Sutton Bay. The ATV remained at the site of the incident, sinking below the surface. The ministry of environment has been contacted.
 

Paramedics in Sault Ste Marie now making house calls

Paramedics in Sault Ste. Marie have increased their responsibilities by way of house calls. It’s all to reduce 911 calls and overcrowding in hospital emergency rooms. They have applied for a $75,000 grant that will see it develop a new paramedicine program. The idea is paramedics will assess high-risk individuals at their homes.
 

Timmins raising Alzheimer Society flag

Timmins Mayor Pirie and alongside the Alzheimer Society Executive Director, Tracy Koskamp-Bergeron raised the organization’s flag in front of city hall this week, to acknowledge January is Alzheimer Awareness Month. Despite the current mandate, the organization is doing its best to meet the needs of local residents with support, education and assistance.
 

OPP stop truck driver with a flat tire, unsecure load

An OPP officer is being noted for having a sharp eye and acting quickly after spotting a transport truck, travelling along Highway 69 on a flat tire. It happened just south of Sudbury. It was later found that the load was, allegedly, not properly secured and other checks had not been done. The 38-year-old-driver has some tough questions to answer.
 

Timmins City services continuing… nearly without impact

Even with current mandates, Timmins Mayor George Pirie says there will be minimal impact on city services. While the arenas, the Sportsplex swimming pool and the museum are closed for now, Service Timmins has been already been operating at 50% as are both library branches. City council meetings are going ahead on the 11th and 25th of this month. They will be virtual. Garbage pick-up or snow clearing are going ahead.
 

Elliot Lake Amateur Theatre Ensemble is looking for writers

The Elliot Lake Amateur Theatre Ensemble is looking for scripts for a one-act play. It is the first time the group has taken on a project since the 2019 collapse of the civic centre roof that destroyed the auditorium. They’re now looking for a play that can be done in a monologue style that can be done in conjunction with others.
 

North Bay takes the top spot Uhaul

The U-Haul Canadian Growth Cities list is out Northern Ontario is making the list in a notable way. For the second year in a row, North Bay is the most popular Canadian city for uhaulers. Arrivals in 2021 rose 40 percent when compared to 2020. Greater Sudbury made No. 3 on the list of 25 Canadian cities up from No. 6 in 2019. Sault Ste. Marie came in No. 12.
 

Have patience with the plow – Timmins Police

Timmins Police are calling the general public to be patient when it comes to snow plows. Moreover, they’re asking residents not to try and pass in residential neighbourhoods. They say it’s inherently unsafe to leave a freshly plowed road surface, pass your snow plow and then enter into an unplowed road surface.
 

The Bay has now Bag Tags… for now

The City of North Bay has tossed a change in policy when it comes to Garbage Pickup. They’ve gone from three bags to two… unless you have garbage bag tags. The city says they’re not out of those. The city communications officer and Miller Waste Systems say they will be picking up the extra bag for a few weeks until the city can secure additional tags.
 

Habitat home going up in Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste. Marie and area are accepting applications for affordable, accessible housing through Habitat for Humanity on Blake Avenue. It will be built this year. Applications must be submitted by Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. and will be reviewed as they are filed.
