Greater Sudbury – Many outdoor facilities remain open

The city of Greater Sudbury says while some facilities have closed others have adjusted to accommodate the latest round mandates. Outdoor recreation amenities like parks, outdoor rinks, the Queens Athletic Skating Oval are all open. All they ask is that if you attend, please give everyone the appropriate distance.
 

COVID-19 Outbreak Declared Over

Really good news out of Greater Sudbury. A COVID-19 outbreak that has spanned several months in Sudbury is now over. Public Health Sudbury and Districts first declared the outbreak among people living in Memorial Park on Sept. 27, 2021. It was declared over on Jan. 1, 2022. That day marked two weeks of no new cases. They have now completed the necessary follow-up.
 

Several LTC outbreaks declared

Several outbreaks were also announced yesterday. One was at Sudbury Developmental Services (Ester House). Another was at Community Living Temiskaming South. A third was at Extendicare in Timmins. All health units are working closely with the homes to ensure ongoing measures are maintained to protect residents and staff.
 

Sports for Kids in Timmins accepting applications

Sports for Kids in Timmins is accepting applications for 2022. The organization helps children from low-income families play organized sports. The applications are available at sportsforkidstimmins.com. Full contact information and needed documentation are there.
 

Teen found safe and sound

Many are breathing a sigh of relief as a teen, missing since before New Year has been found safe. 14-year-old Emily Mearow has not been seen since Dec. 20. She had been seen last in the 600 block of Albert Street West.
 

New nurse call bell system needed at TADH

The Timmins and District Hospital is looking for a new nurse call bell system. The hospital opened in 1993 and the call system is just as old. There is no word just yet as to where they would get one, nor how much it would cost but it’s a priority as it improves a patient’s stay.
 

West Nipissing council needs to get moving – Province

West Nipissing needs to meet. That’s the long and short of it according to Provincial mandates. If they don’t meet by the end of the month, the provincial government could step in. Meetings have been cancelled since November. Impasses kept the council from meeting regularly in September and October as well.
 

International bridge traffic drops once again

In Sault Ste Marie the International Bridge Administration says bridge traffic for the calendar year-to-date on Dec. 31, 2021, has decreased by 42.5 percent from 2020. This difference in crossings comparing 2021 to 2020 is 13,221 which represents an increase of 115.4 percent for the month of December.
 

N.O.A.H ready to move on Seniors Housing

The Non-Profit Organization for Almaguin Housing is now ready to move forward with the Sundridge project of housing for seniors. In an email to Sundridge municipal staff, NOAH chair Bill Atkinson said the organization “would like to continue and finalize the rezoning initiative.” The land NOAH wants to see rezoned is a 1.25-hectare site on Highway 124. The site is occupied by the now-closed Restaurant and three smaller buildings.
 

Driver without injury after vehicle struck by a train

Temiskaming OPP say a driver is without injury after failing to yield to a train in New Liskeard. It happed on Whitewood Avenue during the day time. The vehicle was dragged a short distance before coming to a stop in a nearby ditch.
 

Only two charged by OPP in Festive RIDE Campaign

The Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) participated in the Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign which ran from November 18, 2021, to January 2, 2022. During that time frame, members of the Kirkland Lake OPP detachment conducted 162 RIDE programs and two people were charged with impaired operation.
