The City of Greater Sudbury has launched a new online portal for people to apply for building permits. Called “Pronto,” the service went online this week and can be found by going to the city’s website.

An agreement has been signed to transfer a vacant North Bay property on Brookes Street from the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board’s Nipissing District Housing Corporation to Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS) for the planned construction and administration of 60 affordable housing units.

A number of Timmins city sidewalks have been opened for cyclists. They include the west sidewalk on Theriault Boulevard south of Vimy Avenue to Avenue Road and the north Algonquin sidewalk from Avenue Road to the Mattagami Heights trail head at Participark. Biking will also be permitted on the new sidewalk being built on the north side of Riverside Drive between Shirley Street and Government Road.

A Sault Ste. Marie tour boat company is beginning its second season with some floatation from the province. The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. is providing a little more than $162,500 ($162,750) for the purchase of the ‘Miss Marie,’ which began offering tours last summer.

Road closures are coming for Elliot Lake Heritage days. Spruce Avenue will be closed between Highway 108 and Central Avenue on Friday, June 30 from noon to 1 a.m. No public traffic will be allowed during these times.

At last report, the number of active wildfires in the Northeast region has fallen, slightly, from 26 to 21. No new fires were declared Tuesday. As it stands now, of those 21 fires, eight are out of control, while two are being held, one is being observed and 10 are under control.

The communities of Skead and Beaver Lake will keep their vollenteer fire departments. While others will close, this marks a reprieve for two following months of discussion.

North Bay had a bear come calling yesterday. It was sighted near Chippewa Secondary School on Wednesday morning. There was no reported threat to the public, and it appears as though the bear has since moved off.

The Northern College bookstore is now a hub where riders can purchase a 10-ride or monthly bus pass in Porcupine and South Porcupine.

Air Canada adds another flight between Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto starting Saturday.
