It was a historic day in the house of commons today… as Nipissing Temiskaming MP Anthony Rota resigned his seat as Speaker of the House of Commons. This is after taking full responsibility for inviting and publicly recognizing a 98-year-old Ukrainians War Vet, who, unbeknownst to Rota served in the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit under the command of the Nazis during the Second World War. Rota’s constituency office confirmed he will remain as MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming.

Ontario Northland says work on reinstating Northlander passenger rail service is progressing. The ONTC is surveying companies that may be interested in bidding on several upcoming projects.

Greater Sudbury city council approved a 150-unit building for the corner of Algonquin Road and Rockwood Drive, retirement home at six storeys. City planners suggested should be kept to four storeys, cutting about 60 apartments.

A tea room called The Lavender Fox is about to open in Cobalt. The owners are a young couple and family of MP Charlie Angus.

The city of Temiskaming Shores is inviting developers to submit their proposals for the New Liskeard marina property.

In Greater Sudbury, the Robinson Lake trail pedestrian bridge is getting replaced. It was lost to flooding this spring, will be replaced in mid-October.

Highway 11 north of North Bay has reopened between Collins Road in North Bay and Highway 64 in Marten River. This was following an accident yesterday.

College students in Sault Ste. Marie are prepping to help seniors in the community through the annual Trades Day of Caring by helping local seniors with yard work and other tasks to prepare for winter.

Sudbury’s downtown mall is contending to become the new home for the city’s main public library. Greater Sudbury is discussing creating a cultural hub in Tom Davies Square, consisting of a multicultural centre, an art gallery and the library.

If Purolator in North Bay drops off a red bag at your door, don’t worry… in North Bay they’re backing the North Bay Food Bank through its “Tackle Hunger Red Bag” doorstep food drive. This is the inaugural event in North Bay with a goal of 500 red bags of food for the food bank.

People from various parts of Ontario have been in Timmins to participate in the annual Ontario Field Ornithologists Convention. It is only in recent years, that the conventions had a northeastern Ontario component. Last year, it was held in Smooth Rock Falls.
