Today’s the day in Greater Sudbury, when the first of six Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are activated. They’re located in a number of locations including Falconbridge Road, and drivers are reminded to watch their speed.

North Bay City council voted in favour of using $1 million in interest payments to lessen the tax burden on taxpayers. This week, council agreed to a 2.74 per cent municipal tax change this year. The increase will represent an increase just north of ($103) $103.47 on a $250,000 tax assessment.

Two new residential lots in Porcupine have been sold to a developer. $22,500 and $25,000 was paid out for two lots Michener Boulevard in Melview Park. The sale was approved by Timmins council at its March 19 meeting.

Meanwhile, in Sault Ste Marie, a new apartment development is expected to break ground this summer. The “coming soon” sign has already been raised for three 47-unit buildings will be built on vacant property at the north end of Pine Street.

A Weather advisory issued for a swath of Northern Ontario that includes the stretch between Wawa down and around highway 17 to Manitoulin Island. There is also one in effect for Sudbury. The Winter weather travel advisory in effect for Friday.

The Province of Ontario has given HSN in Greater Sudbury, approval to plan an expansion. Nothing is firm yet as it is early days.

West Nipissing council is close to passing a short-term rental by-law. Council is discussing number of licenses and whether to grandfather current operators.

The Soo Locks officially opens today. It happens at 6 p.m. This is earlier than the scheduled 12:01 a.m. March 25th.

While it could be above zero early next week, this morning… the City of Timmins is in the back half of an extreme cold weather alert. People who need emergency shelter can go to Living Space, 316 Spruce St. S.

Winter weather travel advisory in effect for this afternoon for Greater Sudbury, Manitoulin, Elliot Lake and surrounding areas. Localized snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm, with higher amounts possible. It’s slated to wrap up by early tomorrow morning.

A winter storm and snowfall warnings, with accumulation up to 50 centimeters, were issued for some parts of Canada today. That includes Toronto area where up o 15 centimetres of snow is possible exceeding a record of 6.4 centimetres logged last month.

North Bay’s warming centre says the last day of operations this Spring will be March 31st. The centre, located on Fraser St. will open again in November.

Renovations have started at the Timmins Public Library’s main branch. The hope to create a larger space for older teens and young adults. The work is expected to be done in the late summer.

Sault Ste. Marie will play host to Ringette Ontario’s Northeast Regional Ringette Championships this weekend. The tournament will boast participation from 52 teams across the northern region.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is taking measures to lower radon levels at a School in Massey. Less than half of the classrooms at St. Mary Catholic had elevated levels of radon. Thankfully they’re not high levels and are being eliminated.
