Laurentian University has announced the appointment of Malcolm M. Campbell as its new provost and vice-president, academic. He assumes his new role effective Aug. 1 and takes over from Brenda Brouwer.

Heritage Railway and Carousel riders in North Bay will have to wait a week. Bad weather has delayed the official opening for the Heritage Railway and Carousel for a week until the long weekend beginning May 18.

In Timmins, traffic is moving a little better downtown this morning. This is as the lights on Second Ave. at Cedar St. and Pine St. are flashing red full-time, making them four-way stops on the major detour for connecting link reconstruction.

In Elliot Lake, a water main break on Hillside Drive North in Elliot Lake put the entire community under a boil water advisory yesterday. Significant time was needed to isolate and repair the break.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is receiving new protective gear that is said to be safer than traditional equipment. Free of chemicals commonly referred to as PFAS, the Sault is the first city in Canada to receive it.

After a five-year hiatus, the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards are back with a ceremony in Sudbury, June 29. It recognizes achievements from musicians and filmmakers in the region.

The flood warning in in the North Bay District, including Lake Nipissing… has been extended. Put in place by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for several areas, residents are advised to keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around shorelines and low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, the flood outlook has ended for the Timmins area. It was first issued on April 11.

Sault Ste Marie City councilors will learn next week of a plan to slow down traffic, slightly on five city streets. Temporary flexible traffic-calming bollards are going down on sections of Queen Street East, MacDonald Avenue, Black Road, Fourth Line West, and Base Line.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is considering an investment of over a half-a-million dollars toward improvements to the YMCA and proposes backstopping a 10-year lease on the property on behalf of a potential mystery buyer who remains anonymous.
If the deal moves ahead, the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA will continue to be the operating entity for the McNabb Street facility and its on-site and off-site daycare operations.

Latest reports from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s suggest wildfire season in northeastern Ontario is off to a thankfully slow start compared to last year. There are currently no active wildland fires in the Northeast Fire Region.

Sault City council will be asked Monday to award a $2-million contract to a Sault Ste. Marie Construction Group for reconstruction of Lake Street between Queen Street East and the entrance to Bellevue Park. It was the lowest bidder among three companies.
