This year, more than 35,000 students from grades 7 to 12 will be able to explore more than 140 skilled trades through Level Up! Skilled Trades Career Fairs taking place between Sept. 12 to Nov. 28. The fair returns to Sudbury on Sept. 17, and to North Bay October 16. For the first time a fair will be held in the Timmins area, with a fair set for South Porcupine on Oct. 4.
The North Bay Police Service is warning the public about increased bear sightings. That said, there are no reports of bears acting aggressively. They’re also encouraging the public to keep their dogs leashed in light of the increased number of bear sightings.
This week Elliot Lake city council approved a staff recommendation to purchase ball field lighting for Burley 1 and 2 at a cost of just under $350k ($349,921) Burley Park is located in the vicinity of Pearson Drive and Mississauga Avenue, behind Our Lady of Lourdes school.
In Sault Ste Marie, firefighters are being thanked after coming to the rescue of a woman who drove it into the water at the marina. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred about 2:30 p.m. at the Bellevue Marina
Meanwhile, Timmins firefighters answered the call for service after flames erupted between two homes on James Street in Timmins. The fire believed to be caused by an electric vehicle broke out between two homes on James Street. There were no injuries.
Contractors are onsite at Science North. They’re there to remove the floating portion of the Jim Gordon Boardwalk. Work is expected to be completed by Sept. 18. They’re asking the public to stay clear.
All is well in Sault Ste Marie, after reports of gunshots heard near Cooper Street and Goulais Avenue, that’s in the vicinity of Korah Collegiate and Vocational School. Police responded… it turned out to be firecrackers.
Big news for Manitoulin Island residents…. among consideration of other options to keep people from harming the wildlife, fish, other species and habitat at Bridal Veil Falls, Billings township council is starting the process of dissuading people from swimming at the falls. A no swimming sign is on its way up and other measures are on the way.
The Greater Cochrane Historical Society is looking for members. The group formed last February and is looking for people interested in the history of Cochrane and the surrounding small communities.
A second-floor ramp option has been added to the Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square project. The $2.7-million single-storey ramp from the ground floor is all part of accessibility upgrades to council chambers.
The City of North Bay is whittled down the options for its planned construction of a new cricket pitch. Three recommended sites at the Steve Omischl Sports Complex will be presented to the North Bay City Council during its Tuesday, Sept. 17 regular meeting.
