The city of Greater Sudbury is making promises following the merger of several fire stations. While the news isn’t sitting well with some, the city says service will remain. It will simply come from different locations. The move is expected to save the city $73.8k ($73,833) annually.

Meanwhile, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services personnel have seen their responses to outdoor fire calls go up in 2024. The 344 outdoor fire calls logged by NBFES this year have already surpassed the previous high of 311 set in 2023.

The executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association Cochrane-Temiskaming is making a plea for funding from the Province. Among its needs is money for supportive housing.

The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) held its inaugural meeting this week, when both Jennifer Sarlo and Elaine Johnston were acclaimed to their respective roles as chair and vice-chair of the board.

In Elliot Lake, due to adverse weather conditions, the water main flushing scheduled to occur this morning in the Stollery Place area has been postponed until tomorrow.

Lights are continuing the go up everywhere in keeping wit the season… and the Living Nativity, a beloved Christmas tradition in Greater Sudbury is coming back, returns to the grounds of Science North for its 37th year. Put on by All Nations Church, the event takes place nightly Dec. 21-24, with the presentation commencing at 7:30 p.m.

The Gathering Place says it’s executive director Dennis Chippa is no longer with them. Chippa, who was the face of the city’s soup kitchen for nine years and the board says its now time to move in a different direction.

The old Ramada Inn in Timmins has been sold. A much talked about sale… the Cochrane District Services Board has finalized the sale for the building for for $10M.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has come up with a new approach to tackling shoplifting. While it’s a multi-point plan, this follows an uptick in the area. It includes looking for better supports for those in need.

The city of Greater Sudbury says if you’re concern about city streets, be encouraged. The city will have it all cleared by 5:30am tomorrow in keeping with existing policies.

Enbridge Gas and North Bay Fire and Emergency Services is helping to make homes a little safer. As it’s gets increasing cooler outside, Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says they now have 250 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for those in need.

The Timmins Food Bank says as the Christmas season is all but upon us, the public is invited to bring some non-perishable food items. They say the typical client receives three grocery bags once a month.

The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library’s North Branch is trying to brighten the season for residents by hosting a festive open house later this month. The open house will happen on Dec. 18 from 1-5 p.m. at the Northern Av enue facility.

And from the world of learning Students of École catholique Georges Vanier in Smooth Rock Falls had a chance to learn more about fractions this week… with pie. Together, they rolled up their sleeves and baked delicious apple pies. They then got to visualize the fractions by associating proportions to different slices of pie. To top it all off, students enjoyed some pie to celebrate their new skills and knowledge.. making sure everyone got a slice of the action.
