Seven students from Sudbury will be heading to the Canada-Wide Science Fair later this spring. Selected for the honour following the Sudbury Regional Science Fair… this follows the even held at Laurentian University over the weekend.

Mindemoya is getting a bit of a reprieve when it comes to the community arena. This is after town council in Mindemoya agreed to a temporary fix to keep the rink from being closed.

The province is extending offers of Strong Mayor Powers to Mattawa and West Nipissing. That announcement today includes 169 existing communities invited to get on board with the program to help deliver on provincial priorities, such as building more homes, transit and other infrastructure.

The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum for federal election candidates. It happens next week at Sault College. Slated for April 15, the forum will see candidates discuss issues specific to the business community.

Manioulin resident Roy Eaton, a long time educator, and supporter of marine tourism, and the Royal Canadian Legion has been honored with a King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command.

The downtown Gore Bay revitalization project will begin next month and will mark a new chapter in the town’s history. This follows a meeting attended by about 100 local residents last week.

And residents in northern Ontario are being asked not to prune any oak trees for the next several months to prevent the spread of oak wilt. Many factors cause discolored oak leaves, including drought. While its origin is unknown, oak wilt disease is something can be stopped… if we can all keep from embarking on a spring tradition.

Sudbury drivers are encouraged to take their time. The winter-like spring this year is taking a toll on area roads. Evidently Deep potholes in Sudbury are popping up so fast, it’s a race for crews to fill them. 10 crews are out and have filled 56,000 potholes.

Renovations are underway to turn a former hotel in Timmins into seniors’ housing, and some residents could begin moving in by fall. The Timmins Chamber of Commerce, Cochrane District Services Board (CDSB) met this week, with CAO Brian Marks provided an update on the project. Sault

The City of Elliot Lake has hired a new chief building official who will start later this month. William McCaffrey has more than 25 years’ experience and has worked on a wide range of projects.

Sudbury Police are continuing their search for a missing person in the Corsi Hill neighbourhood. The 39-year-old woman, identified by the name Parisa (no last name provided), was last seen at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7 in the Corsi Hill area.

The city of North Bay is taking action on affordable housing issues in the community. Community Services says their Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan and the District of Nipissing Social Service Administration’s housing needs assessments has also identified the need for all forms of housing, rental and affordable housing units.

Dozens of community partners have gathered in Sudbury this week… to sign the fifth edition of the Community Threat Assessment Protocol. The protocol was created to prevent and respond to tragic events in schools. Sudbury is one of the first regions in Ontario to sign the fifth edition of the protocol.
