
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board has appointed a teenager who has battled cancer as a student trustee. Lily Yeomans, a Grade 10 student from Marymount Academy, will serve in the 2025–27 term. She will begin her new duties on Aug. 1, joining co-student trustee David Akero.
North Bay won’t be investigating the idea of a ward system of elections anytime soon. A council committee voted down a motion to ask the clerk to prepare a report. Several councilors spoke against creating wards.
Police are looking for a missing snowmobiler west of Timmins. On Sunday, April 20, South Porcupine OPP received a report of an overdue snowmobiler on Horwood Lake. There is a heavy police presence at the lake, which is about 70 kilometers west of Timmins, for the ongoing search.
The new Cochrane Beautification Committee is looking at its mandate once again. They’re looking at putting flowers in green spaces, for example; and the maintenance of assets like the Lake Commando Boardwalk. They’re hoping to hear from residents who believe they have a great idea.

Everyone is safe after a house fire in Callander Monday, but unfortunately, the home is a total. The call came in around 5 p.m. last evening for a structure fire in the South Shore area of the municipality. The fire has been blamed on unattended cooking.

Sudbury OPP say highway 17 has been reopened. Closed in both directions in the Hagar area east of Sudbury this morning due to downed power lines, there were no reports of injuries. Once again, the road has reopened.

The city of Timmins, this April 22… just like last year is making it earlier to be out and about. They’re offering free bus rides on Timmins Transit. The hope is to lower overall energy consumption and saves fuel for drivers.
The Ministry of Natural Resources – Sault Ste. Marie/Blind River District is advising area residents that a Flood Warning remains in effect for the district until Tuesday, April 29 at noon. Residents throughout the district, especially those located in the Goulais River watershed area, should keep a close watch on water conditions, and stay away from fast-moving rivers and streams.
Sudbury crews from four fire stations responded to a residential fire on Copper Street on Sunday afternoon in Sudbury. The fire appeared to originate from the basement and spread up the walls into the attic space. There were, thankfully, there were no reports of injuries.”

The Ontario government is providing more than $1 million to expand the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology underground mining centre. The money will fund a news facility at NORCAT’s Underground Centre in Sudbury to provide companies with a place to design, test and repair technologies that will help develop solutions for the global mining industry.
