
It’s that time of year. Municipal street sweeping efforts in Sudbury are slated to begin on April 28. A train of crews will begin in the Ramsey Lake watershed on April 28 and circle around the municipality clockwise until they complete the job in the Valley in six to eight weeks.
Speaking of trucks, those in North Bay you may see an increase in military personnel, traffic and planes in the area this weekend. From April 25-27, Canadian Army Reserve personnel from the 32 Canadian Brigade Group are conducting convoy and supply operations training on roads and highways between Toronto, North Bay and Burwash.
Timmins Police Service is asking for the public’s help in locating 15-year-old Aliya. The teen is described as: 15 years old, Female, White, 5’2” and 110 lbs. She has shoulder length brown hair and Brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a red sweater with white jogging pants and white running shoes.
Malcolm White, who retired last year as the city of Sault Ste. Marie’s chief administrative officer, now has a new gig. He is working as a consultant with the company Ironside.
A new Research Chair for Healthy Aging has been appointed at Health Sciences North (HSN). This is according to the Hospital and its Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) and the HSN Foundation. Dr. Chris Verschoor has been named as the HSN Foundation Research Chair in Healthy Aging.
An open house for potential volunteers in North Bay with the Heritage Railway and Carousel Company has been rescheduled. Originally slated to take place last Saturday, it was washed out.. It’s now coming up this Saturday.
Two days are now set aside as the focus of this year’s Adopt-A-Block community cleanup in Timmins. Community programs say that on May 23rd and 24th will be the days individuals and groups can choose a block or area, and the city will provide gloves and garbage bags.
Ontario is investing $1.5 million in Elliot Lake pool upgrades to get the facility open again. It’s also said to help with job creation.
Meanwhile, the province has announced $3.7 million in funding to be shared between eight different Sault Ste. Marie-based companies. To support economic development and growth, George Pirie, Ontario’s Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth and MPP for Timmins, made the announcement this week.
Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre says work is ongoing to address addiction and homelessness in the city, higher levels of government are still needed. Over the weekend, Lefebvre issued an update on the progress being made.
Laurentian University president Lynn Wells has marked one year as the university’s 12th president and vice-chancellor. Wells joined Laurentian in April of 2024, coming from Brock University… adding that the past twelve months have made for a “wonderful year”
