There were thankfully no injures, but five in Coppercliffe have been displaced following a Sunday fire. It caused upwards of $200,000 in damages. It’s been blamed on “careless cooking”

Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and Victim Services welcomed community members with an event outside the new Division 2 location at 180 Brock Street. The event marked the start of Police Week and Victims and Survivors of Crime Week.

Meanwhile, North Bay police is in enforcement this week for Canada Road Safety Week. Drivers are being told officers are concentrating on speeding, cell phone use, seatbelt use, enclosed mobility scooters and muffler enforcement.

The emergency department at the North Shore Health Network’s Thessalon site will be closed starting this morning at 8am. The closure, which will run for 24 hours, is due to physician shortages.

Stats show most some crime activity in Timmins is trending downwards. In comparison with the first quarter of 2024, the numbers show a drop of 13.4 percent, property crime has decreased 2.4 percent, and overall police calls have decreased by 3.8 percent.

Construction has begun the expansion of senior’s living in Sudbury. Finlandia Village, is undergoing its seventh expansion and should be ready by next summer.

The Old Mill on Manitoulin Island is marking 100 years. The Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong was once a working mill and is a popular museum.

Sault Ste. Marie will investigate cost of switching away from a municipal police force, moving instead to OPP. While the move was unanimous, the motion was introduced by Coun. Sonny Spina, a former city police detective.

With less than a week to go before the start of the Victoria Day long weekend, the forest fire danger rating in the area surrounding Timmins is either moderate or low. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry began tracking the 2025 forest fire season on April 1 and, as of Monday afternoon, there was just one active fire near Timmins.
