Cambrian College and the Sudbury Police gave a nod to Police Week with Police Day. Events included a fitness competition, displays of GSPS vehicles and equipment and a Q&A session yesterday at the school.

A section of Highway 144 was closed yesterday to a forest fire. The closure was between the Water Shed and Highway 101 in Timmins.

A strike involving the Canadian Hearing Services (CHS) is now in its third week. Deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing North Bay workers continue picketing efforts. The strike impacts three municipal employees.

Timmins Police are looking for a teen who has been reported missing. 16-year-old Brook is described as a Caucasian female, around 5’2” and 140 pounds with black shoulder-length hair. When last seen, she was wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants and black toque.

The Touch-a-Truck will return to Sault Ste. Marie next month. It will happen on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Station Mall in the old Sears parking lot. Residents will have a chance to meet front-line personnel and see some emergency vehicles.

A flood watch remains in effect for the Mattawa River, downstream of Hurdmans Dam to the Ottawa River. Mattawa Island Conservation Area is currently flooded and has been closed to the public until further notice.

To the wild side, a polar bear at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat celebrated in style in recent days, noting his 12th birthday. He was given a massive cardboard box to tear into filled with all sorts of bear treats. Henry had lots of visitors and a camera trained on him, as the facility wanted to be pre-bared for the party.

St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sudbury says a fence is going up in the name of Security. The church has a nice environment both inside and out and they would like it to stay safe and clean.

Algoma Manor Nursing Home will be delivering what’s being called an “immersive and collaborative” Practical Nursing program. The training will be hosted at Algoma Manor’s classroom and will feature virtual theory with concurrent practical experience.

Timmins has one of its first forest fire of the season. The blaze near Highway 144 is one of three, as of news time, reported in the northeast region today by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
