The City of Greater Sudbury has been asked to contribute to affordable housing. More than $1 million toward a 38-unit affordable housing complex next to the downtown Sudbury water tower.

Summer hasn’t even started yet, but plans are in the works for this November’s Winter Outdoor Market in North Bay. The dates are set for the first three Saturdays that month and then on Friday, Nov. 28 to coincide with the Old-Fashioned Downtown Christmas Walk.

Construction season has once again started in Timmins on the connecting link. This year, it’s in the east end, rebuilding Hwy. 101 between Crawford St. and Lawrence St.

Concerns are being raised in Sault Ste Marie after at least one collision occurred at the west end intersection of Wallace Terrace and Goulais Avenue where traffic signals were removed as part of a study. City council has already voted in favour of reducing a large portion of Wallace Terrace from three lanes to two.

Armstrong Township council has given the go-ahead to the fire department to contract the company Firehouse Training to provide certification training for its firefighters. Certification is required before Canada Day.

Greater Sudbury Police Service says its bicycle patrols are proving effective in the city’s downtown core. They say the benefits include tighter searches and improving community relations through daily patrols.

A new sports academy in North Bay is calling the Canadore Dome its new home. The new
Panthers High-Performance Sports Academy is designed for dedicated athletes looking to enhance their physical performance through expert-led strength and conditioning programs.

Algoma University’s board of governors is accepting applications for new members. The deadline to apply for the volunteer position is May 27.

As part of their In-Service Smoke and CO Alarm Program, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is going door-to-door. It’s all to spread awareness about fire safety in the community.

Elliot Lake now offering Zoom links for advisory committee meeting. Anyone who wishes to speak at the meetings is still asked to register for Public Presentation, Delegation, or Public Input separately.

The city of Sudbury is inviting residents to explore public services. As part of Public Works Week, the City of Greater Sudbury will host an interactive open house May 24, featuring equipment displays, staff meet-and-greets, and career information.

A trustee at the Near North District School Board is stepping. The board says Ashley St. Pierre, chair, announced the resignation of Chantal Phillips, Zone 1 Trustee, effective June 30. There’s no word yet from the board on a replacement procedure.

A fire near Gogama is under control. Timmins 1 is one of two forest fires burning in the Northeast Region. The second one is Sudbury 9, which was confirmed yesterday (May 19) in Killarney Provincial Park. In Monday’s fire update, the MNR said it was 0.1 hectares and not under control.

Station Mall is once again up for sale. It is expected to draw interest from various potential purchasers now that Sault Ste. Marie’s largest shopping centre is on the market after its owner entered receivership.
