Several road safety changes are being made to the east-west stretch of Municipal Road 80. It’s happening from Val Therese to midway through Hanmer, including reduced speed limits. All in the name of safety.

East Ferris has a council seat to fill. With former mayor Pauline Rochefort now an MP, Rick Champagne has been appointed mayor, leaving a seat open.

The City of Timmins has written off nearly $337K in unpaid fines. All are unpaid Provincial Offence Act (POA) fines that are 10 years in default. It includes 1,055 files.

The Huron Superior Catholic District School Board could see some lay offs. More than 70 educational assistants. Up to 74 positions are funded through Jordan’s Principle could be cut at the end of the school year.

From the good news file, Emily Anstice from Tehkummah on Manitoulin Island and in Grade 3. This follows a first in the Primary Division at the Regional Spelling Bee Competition in Sudbury in April the nationals at the 38th Annual Championships. Emily came away from the National Spelling Bee Competition placing third in the Primary Division for all of Canada.

Elliot Lake City council voted this week to reconsider plans for vacant land at Azilda’s Lionel E. Lalonde Centre, approving a motion that will add a portion of the property to the city’s affordable housing land bank. This comes only after construction begins on a long-awaited aquatic facility.

Final property tax bills are now available for Sudbury residents. This year’s property tax bills reflect an overall 4.4-per-cent residential levy increase.

Ontario Northland has released new content to promote the anticipated 2026 new-and-improved return of the Northlander. They will include a number of new and updated features. It is expected to hit the tracks in 2026.

Six new locations for automated speed-enforcement cameras. The cameras will be active in their new locations on June 2. The locations include Municipal Road 80 in Hanmer, Notre Dame Avenue, Barry Downe Road and Falconbridge Road.

This week the city of North Bay, in collaboration with Clean Green, Beautiful North Bay has planted more trees in the city. This time at North Bay’s City Hall where three maple trees were planted on the McIntyre Street side of City Hall as part of a centennial tree planting.

Two people are receiving treatment in Timmins following an incident with a bear early this morning. It happened at around 4 when the resident letting their dog out. The dog was not harmed. The investigation as to the location of the bruin is continuing. Residents are encouraged to be bear wise.

Applications are now open for Sault College’s automotive industry pre-apprenticeship program. “Drive Your Way into the Automotive Industry” runs from July 7 to Feb. 27.

Elliot Lake city council has voted to accept the staff recommendation to take on debt in the amount of just over $7.4 million ($7,463,500) to move $3.3m from the Arts and Culture Hub reserve and $1m from the Land Sales Purchases reserve to the Building and Facilities reserve and approve the capital budget for 2025.
