Laurentian University researchers have secured another $400K in grants, all from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the New Frontiers in Research Fund. Topics include homeless disaster preparedness, post-pandemic inflation, and environmental changes.

Meanwhile, Temiskaming Shores is getting access to new programming. It’s all thanks to a new Provincial infuse. The township says that’s its all for new family-friendly programming.

The Township of Bonfield has a new fire chief. Shaun McGee. To welcome him, the township held an open house at the fire department just ahead of the weekend, recognizing the significant achievements of its volunteer firefighters.

A fire in a home on Bloor Ave was knocked down in short order in South Porcupine just ahead of the weekend. It started in the basement. Thankfully, everyone got out without injuries. The cause will remain undetermined pending an investigation.

Sault Ste. Marie Police are looking for a missing teen. Authorities are searching for a 14-year-old last seen on Second Line West. Brody, described as approximately 4-foot-11 and 100 lbs, with wavy blonde hair, hazel eyes.

And South Korea’s Seoul National University says more than 1,400 students have applied for an unusual scholarship. They’re offering up to $540 to pupils who climb six mountains. Eligible mountains are those listed in Black Yak’s 100 Famous Mountains, and so far, applications are on their way up.

Progress could be a go on four-laning the remaining stretch of Highway 69 between Sudbury and Toronto in Ontario. Currently, approximately 68 kilometers of the highway from Henvey Inlet First Nation to Nobel remains incomplete. At a news conference in ahead of the weekend, Premier Doug Ford was asked about expanding all of Highways 11 and 17, rather than focusing solely on areas near the Manitoba border. Ford expressed strong support for the idea.

Sudbury Police are reminding residents to lock it or lose it. This follows a rash of break-ins to vehicles. While several reports have been made, residents should avoid leaving doors unlocked… and potential crimes of opportunity.

An annual soccer tournament in Greater Sudbury is celebrating its Italian roots. More than 30 teams from across Ontario will compete in the Coppa Caruso later this week. The tournament was first held in 1992.

Provincial Funding is coming to North Bay. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced $400,000 in provincial funding for North Bay on Friday for exceeding housing targets. The city built nearly 400 homes last year – five times the requirement. The funds will support more new builds and local infrastructure.

Meanwhile Timmins will gain more primary care providers with $1M in new funding. Three area health teams submitted a proposal for the funding from Queen’s Park with the goal of serving more than 2,500 patients by adding new medical staff including doctors, nurse practitioners and administrators.

Prince Township says on the heels of the annual tractor cruise, they’re still looking for volunteers. They say it was a healthy turnout after 14 consecutive years.
