The Greater Sudbury Police Board is unanimous in endorsing a letter urging the province to keep the Cecil Facer Youth Centre open. The letter cautions that there are negative consequences. The closure is slated to take place in 2027.

The Ontario government is providing the Township of Strong and the Township of Joly with up to $555,000. It’s all to help pay for emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs due to flooding that occurred in June 2024.

Dozens of staff positions will soon be on the chopping block at Algoma University. Between 50 and 75 staff will be laid off in the coming months as the school faces steep operating deficits sparked by an apparent drop in student population.

Two motions will be presented to Gore Bay council at its next meeting, one that calls for town staff to explore options for restructuring its municipal boundaries. The second is to not allow any new water service connections outside of town.

After three years and thousands of kilometres, a former Timmins resident, Carlo De Lorenzi is about to complete a goal few have attempted: running all 10,390 streets of Toronto. The 68-year-old will lace up for one last kilometre today, ending at Community Music Schools of Toronto (CMST) in Regent Park.

Strengthened campus security is one of the recommendations of a Laurentian University working group, following an incident involving a threatening phone call that put the university’s campus into lockdown last winter. Following two hours of searching the campus, police indicated the threat wasn’t credible.

The famous pumpkin weigh-off will return next month in Sault Ste Marie. The Algoma Farmers’ Market will host its annual event on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion. While other vegetables will also be featured, many will be keeping their eye on the pumpkins… as the judges will be having a gourd look.

Those in Timmins, living near a homeless encampment and shelter, are being asked to provide the city with feedback on a pilot security program. City council has approved a temporary overnight security patrol to address community
concerns near Spruce Street South at a cost of $22,000.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is once again asking for the public’s help as they search for a missing 30-year-old. Myranda Francoeur was last seen in the 0-100 block of King Street. Francoeur is approximately 5’5″ with a thin build, long blonde hair and blue eyes.
