The latest numbers are in and suggest the land sale and lease transactions between the province and Laurentian University will see the university’s creditors get a total of $53.5 million, noting the university will pay the province $2.1 million a year in rent. Kirkland Lake says they’ve committed to culvert project to reopen Baron Street. The town’s Baron Street bridge, which has been closed to vehicles for more than a decade, is being demolished. The town plans to install a cheaper culvert to reopen the road within a few years, with or without provincial funding.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs opened permit purchases this month for the upcoming season at the same price as last year, despite a six per cent decrease in sales in the last five seasons. Trails across Ontario have been condensed. In the Sudbury district, around 150-200 km have been removed, spread across 10 clubs in the region.

A motion at Sudbury city council will call on province to compensate city for loss of speed camera revenue. This is after the province outlawed speed cameras. Officials say the cameras have been shown to be effective in slowing traffic pushing back on the premier who says there are other ways that are effective that don’t target drivers’ pocketbooks.

The five-week-long strike by 10,000 Ontario college support staff has come to an end with word this morning that a tentative deal has been reached. That deal means picket lines will be coming down at Ontario’s 24 colleges. Full-time support staff will return to work tomorrow.

City council salaries in Greater Sudbury will remain status quo, at least for now. During Tuesday’s meeting of the finance committee, councillors voted unanimously to maintain the salaries of city councillors and the mayor.

After being idled for more than two weeks, Timmins city buses will be back on the streets this weekend. Yesterday Timmins council approved a new four-year contract for CUPE Local 1544 members, who walked off the job on Sept. 28.

Meanwhile, a new five-year average winter control budgeting will be implemented in Sault Ste Marie. The city says over last winter, they recorded a deficit. That process will start with the 2026 budget, to be deliberated by city council in December.

Elliot Lake residents are being reminded to collect bagged leaves. The complementary pickup goes curbside on Nov. 3. Residents are being reminded to prepare yard waste as the city gears up for its year’s to-do.
