Laurentian University welcomes new board vice-chair with financial expertise. Roxanne Bouchard has served on university’s board for almost two years.

Mattawa is ready to purchase a new pump. They have been renting a pump for the Bissett Lift Station, which moves all the town’s wastewater to the lagoon. However, the rental will soon be returned, as the council has approved the purchase of a new pump.

Timmins is receiving nearly $700,000 for emergency treatment services. Through the Community and Safety Well-Being plan, the money will be split between the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) and Northeastern Public Health (NEPH) to strengthen emergency treatment and harm reduction services.

Traffic lights in Sault Ste Marie will be returning soon to the intersection of Wallace Terrace and Goulais Avenue. City councilors voted this week to reinstall the signals after a review ordered last month found a large increase in traffic volume there.

Gore Bay council has given its approval for the design plans and construction for a major renovation project at the Gore Bay Medical Centre.

The City of Greater Sudbury is looking into the possibilities of allowing free transit for seniors, either the first Tuesday of every month or every Tuesday. This is following a successful motion during the Nov. 4 city council meeting. These deliberations are scheduled to begin on Dec. 2.

Three local first response agencies in Nipissing are receiving provincial funding for mental health services. $30,000 from the Province going to the North Bay Police Service, the City of North Bay and the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board.

Emergency personnel have responded to a gas leak in Kirkland Lake. OPP say it’s on Government Road West between Water Lane and Lebel Avenue. The public was advised to avoid the area and follow the directives of officers at the scene.

Sault Ste. Marie officially has a new top cop. Brent Duguay took the oath of office Wednesday during a ceremony at city hall. The son of a former police officer, Duguay followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service in January 1995.

Homes in the Pearson Road and Mississauga areas in Elliot Lake may experience water discoloration due to a fire incident at the landfill. While it’s safe to drink, the city says if residents experience any discoloration, to run the cold water tap before using any appliances such as a washing machine or dishwasher.
