English public students in the Sudbury are making the mark, noting gains in standardized test results. The year-over-year percentage change in all but two assessments surpassed the provincial results, with marked improvement in mathematics, especially in the elementary level.

The Town of Mattawa is hosting a public meeting to discuss the rehabilitation of the Mauril Bélanger Bridge. It will happen on January 17 of next year. The town has currently commissioned a detailed structural review of the bridge, along with an environmental assessment.

A vehicle fire in a Greater Sudbury parking lot prompted an emergency response early yesterday. The fire occurred in a section of the tenant parking at the old Balmoral Apartment Complex, in the city’s Flour Mill area. The complex is operated by the Greater Sudbury Housing Corporation. There were thankfully no injuries.

North Bay Council is expected to approve two major agreements with the federal government this week that could bring more than $131 million in funding to tackle PFAS contamination in the area and upgrade the water treatment plant. The agreements would fund pilot testing and design upgrades at the North Bay Drinking Water Treatment Plant and extend environmental remediation at the airport lands through 2037.

A Timmins and area union is helping stock the shelves at the food banks this holiday season. The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 175 and 633 has lent a hand to make sure shelves are stocked. In October alone, 386 people — including 29 seniors and 139 children — were served at the South Porcupine Food Bank.
