Parents and guardians of students attending a Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon school can enroll in two free French as a second language programs. The Beginner 1 and Beginner 2 courses will be delivered online by Collège Boréal over a 15-week period, beginning Jan. 14 and 15.

The ski season got underway this weekend at the North Bay Nordic Cross Country Ski Club. Officials say they’re excited to announce an early start with inner trails open and groomed with tracks set, and in good early season shape.

An industrial fire closed a road in the north end of Timmins this weekend. Laforest Road was closed between Highway 655 and Airport Road due to an industrial fire. Tankers were shuttling water on Airport Road. People were asked to avoid the area.

A local Christmas tradition aimed at children is back again year. This year’s Children’s Christmas Store opened in Elliot Lake on Nov. 27 at the Gentle Shepherd Church at 3 Ottawa Ave. The store is open three days a week, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

It wasn’t as much as city staff were hoping for, but Sault Ste. Marie city council has approved more money for snow removal in 2026. An additional $800,000 for snow and ice removal and other winter control measures weas shoveled out at their latest meeting.

An event to support the Englehart food bank went ahead this past weekend. The Second annual Food Bank event took place December 13 from 12-7 p.m. at the Englehart Community Complex Arena. Admission is $2 or a non-perishable food item.

Sudbury is currently leading the Northeast in assessment growth. Greater Sudbury notched $142.89 million in assessment growth this year as part of more than $41 billion recorded across the province.

The Township of Calvin is receiving up to $405,000 in provincial disaster recovery funding. Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing, announced the money to help cover emergency response costs and critical infrastructure repairs after flooding in June.

The Timmins and District Hospital is looking for a new president and CEO. Kate Fyfe is retiring early in the new year. She joined the hospital in July 2020.

Sault Ste. Marie city councilors will be asked tonight to grant preliminary support to a $75-million natural gas energy project to be built on three local properties. Two of the 9.9-megawatt gas plants would be on Great Northern Road within the city limits. The other is planned for Fifth Line East.

OPP are continuing with the festive ride campaign. It began on November 20 and will go until January 1st. Police say to expect RIDE programs day or night, seven days week. They can happen along major highways, rural roads or downtown streets.
