Laurentian University faculty are on the picket lines. This is after negotiations with the Laurentian University Faculty Association could not produce an agreement despite continuing through the weekend with a mediator. There is no word as to when talks will resume on getting a deal hammered out.

Residents in Mattawa had their say as part of a public meeting Saturday on the future of the Mauril Bélanger Bridge. Major renovations are planned for the bridge, and town council is looking for input. This discussion has been going on for a while and no final decisions have been made on the bridge.

A delegation from the City of Timmins will be in Toronto this week to meet with provincial ministers and senior officials. It’s all being done as part of the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipal Association Conference discussing priority issues critical to Timmins’ continued economic and community development.

The Senior of the Year Award honors one outstanding local senior in each municipality in Ontario who after the age of 65 has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of the community. New buses are coming. In a limited tender awarded last month, the city has agreed to purchase six GOVA Transit clean diesel buses at a total cost just north of $5.2 million ($5,824,960). At their current $970,000 per bus, the price tag for municipal buses has ballooned from the $564,000 the city paid in 2018.

Open houses are marking a merger’s anniversary. The Porcupine Health Unit and Timiskaming Health Unit became the Northeastern Public Health unit on Jan 1st, 2025. The open house dates stretch until early February.

A tradition of making blast furnace and coke oven steel at Algoma Steel for nearly 125 years has come to and end. The steelmaker says the blast furnace operations have wound down, and decommissioning has begun.
