The coalition of mayors from Northern Ontario’s largest cities, including Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, and Sault Ste Marie is calling on the Province to take action following a new report that links the rise in homelessness with growing concerns over the region’s economy, workforce, and health systems.  They’re asking Queen’s Park will commit to $435M annually, which works out to 1.3 cents for every dollar of northern Ontario’s $34.6 billion economy provided to see housing investments fully integrated with mental health, addictions, and health supports.

Public Health in Sudbury has launched a new electronic medical record system. The move marks a major shift away from paper-based charts and toward a unified digital platform. The system will centralize client and program records, improving access to information, reducing duplication, and supporting more coordinated care.

North Bay will once again be hosting the Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games. This week, Special Olympics Ontario and the North Bay Police Service launched the event, which will take place next January. Athletes will compete in multiple events, including figure skating, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and curling.

The area is back half of yet another cold weather alert. It was issued by the city of Timmins yesterday all due to the extreme and lingering cold weather. Residents are encouraged to check on friends and family who may be susceptible to the cold. People who need emergency shelter can go to Living Space, 316 Spruce St. S.

A new volunteer campaign has launched locally as part of the growing national Healthcare Infusion movement. The hope is to bring together local volunteers who want to make it easier for doctors, nurses, and allied health workers to move here, find jobs, and feel at home. Police are looking for a teen who was reported missing. Tatiana Cugun-Maxwell was last seen at around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 in the 300 block of Douglas Street. The 13-year-old is described as 5’1″ with an average build, long wavy brown hair, and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call Police.

The City of Temiskaming Shores is procure a qualified Contractor for the provision of concrete sidewalk and curb repairs. It for onsite work at various locations and subject to time frame and specifications. Those who are interested or those with information are asked to contact the city of Temiskaming Shores.

Traffic signal upgrades will be completed this year in the city. It’s all part of the year’s-long efforts to ‘modernize outdated infrastructure’ in its traffic signal system. It has been rolling out throughout the municipality in recent years and is now nearing completion.

Council has opted not to review the city’s short-term rental bylaw. That said, that could change at a future meeting. With one councillor absent on Tuesday night, the motion was defeated when the vote ended in a 5-5 tie. Another vote will be held at a future meeting.

Timmins taxpayers will pay almost 4.95% more to the city in 2026 than you did last year. The first budget under the new strong mayor framework has been adopted. The municipal portion of the increase is 3.92%, with the education levy representing the rest.

OPP are looking for those involved in a two-vehicle collision west of Cochrane just after 7:00pm Sunday. By the time officers arrived at the scene, just east of Red Pine Rd. N., one of the vehicles – believed to be a transport truck – had left the scene.

Elliot Lake is about to get a new mobile network provider. Eastlink will be offering its services in the community and surrounding area in a few weeks. They are launching mobile services in the first week of February this year giving residents a number of services.

Workers with the City now say they have removed enough snow to fill the equivalent of 188 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of snow and ice this winter. Just over 14,700 dump truck loads have been hauled to the snow dumps since the start of the season.

Grab your broom! Curling Day in Canada is this Saturday, and the Haileybury Curling Club is participating with an open curling day featuring guests from the Temagami mixed curling club. Any team can enter, to a maximum of 12. Single curlers are welcome.
