Nine teams have arrived in Greater Sudbury this week for the 2026 North American University Mine Rescue Competition. They will test their abilities in mine rescue, first aid and other problem-solving skills. This is a first for hosting for Laurentian University.

Area snow depth, at last measurement is up. 10.5 cm in the past couple of weeks. That’s according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority. That said, with the milder weather, the snowpack across the watershed has become noticeably damper than usual.

Northern College and the Timmins Police Service are leading the way in training students and officers how to de-escalate mental health crisis calls. In a joint program they have continued to us upgraded virtual reality technology as assist in the training.

Algoma University’s first chancellor will be awarded the Order of Ontario. Shirley Horn is one of 30 appointments to the honour that recognizes distinguished service and extraordinary achievements. The university presented Horn with an honorary doctorate in 2025.

The city says they’re aware of the pothole situation with the side roads being in a state of repair from the last snowstorm and the thawing and freezing. Public Works crews are working diligently at clearing the accumulated slush and ice off the roadways.

Callander’s fire chief, Todd Daley, is calling on council to consider replacing the current fire hall on Main Street, next door to the municipal office. He says the current Fire Hall has reached the end of its useful life, is undersized does not meet legislation and standards.

Council seeks new snow removal options, citing what they’re calling inefficiencies and inequities. During a recent meeting, council members requested a report on better ways to dig the city out when snow starts falling causing significant issues for residents.

City Police is reminding residents to stay off the ice on St. Mary’s River. Police have recently received multiple reports of people walking on the ice and even creating holes for a cold swim. They add it’s “extremely dangerous” and they’re issued an immediate stop order.

Emergency water was shut-off notices were given for a number of addresses on Dieppe Ave today, all tied to an emergency water main break repair. Once fixed Occupants were told they could experience reduced water pressure and or water discolouration for a time.

A New Clean Energy Hydro-Turbine Project Information Session goes today in Liskeard. It’s at Riverside Place. It’s a join effort, with Temiskaming First Nation and the Temiskaming community playing host. In addition to the session between 2-4 p.m. today, another goes from 6-8pm.
