Maley Drive under closures for construction
A note to Sudbury Drivers. The road, some call the worst in Sudbury will be closed most of today for restoration. Maley Drive. This is all part of the restoration work for the Maley Drive Extension. In a new release, the city said the road will be reopen when work is complete, approximately 10 p.m. In addition, MR 35 in Chelmsford will see periodic lane closures today from Highway 144 to Notre Dame Street east as a contractor has been hired to do some work.
Fire sends one to hospital in North bay
In North Bay, a three-storey multi-residential building on the 900-block of Algonquin Avenue was the scene of a fire yesterday. The building is owned by the Northeast Mental Health Service, and the North Bay fire department says that the fire began in a kitchen on the third floor. One the tenant of the fire unit was taken to hospital by ambulance. The cause of the blaze has been linked to careless smoking.
Another fire ban in the North
Fire bans continue to pop up across the North. Yesterday, both North Bay and Huron Shores Fire Department’s put fire bans into place as dry conditions continue. This morning, Plummer Additional Township, east of Sault Ste. Marie, has announced a fire ban. The town says no burning or fires are permitted ahead of the long weekend.
30-year-old charged following break and enter, theft
A 30-year-old North Bay man has been arrested in connection with a Duke Street break-in. It happened Sunday when accused allegedly entered a residence on Duke Street and removed property. The break-in was witnessed by a neighbour who contacted North Bay police.
EMS calls spike in early 2018
The Sudbury paramedic services says they’ve had no shortage of calls into the start of the year. In January, EMS responded to more than 10 per cent more calls than the previous year, and in February that number spiked by 9.3 per cent. While there has been some discussion as to why, the emergency services committee says there has been a jump in suspected opioid use in the city.
Cummins still slated to be at Stars and Thunder
Timmins organizers of the Stars and Thunder Festival says Canadian music icon Burton Cummings will be headlining this year’s to-do, despite several injuries he suffered in a car crash in L.A. They Cummins says he will need some recover time, but city officials do not believe it will impact on his scheduled appearance.
