School goes into lock down
Students at Alliance Public School in North Bay went into lock-down for an hour yesterday. This is after one student said they say man, they believe was armed with a gun, on school property. The school board says that two other students reported seeing a man on school property they did not recognize. North Bay Police Service was called to the elementary school and investigation was done, the outcome of which has not been released.
Red light cameras coming to Sudbury?
Three busy intersections in Greater Sudbury could soon be monitored by red light cameras. That is, if a proposal is approved by the city’s finance committee. A staff report on the proposal says an outside firm, was hired to determine which intersections in the city would benefit most from the cameras. If it goes ahead, Paris Street at Cedar Street; Regent Street at Algonquin Road; and, Municipal Road 80 at Dominion Drive could all receive cameras. Another three intersections will be identified later, the report said.
More information released on Tahoe Resources Mine incident
More has been released regarding an incident at Tahoe Resources mine site in Timmins, involving an oxygen cylinder. Reports say that on June 9th, a contract employee was performing a routine pressure check on a first aid oxygen cylinder when the compressed gas being released and a small fire which was quickly extinguished. Emergency personal and fire personnel were called. The company said the worker sustained non-life-threatening injuries
New Police Chief coming to Sault Ste. Marie
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has a new chief. Reports say that Chief designate Hugh Stevenson will be officially sworn in as chief on June 25 and replaces outgoing and retiring Chief Robert Keetch. Stevenson brings 31 years of policing experience, from both the Peel Regional Police Service and the OPP.
PET scanner up and running by next summer
The latest reports say that Sudbury’s long-awaited PET Scanner should be up and running, by next summer. Construction on a new extension to house the machine has already begun at HSN ceremony. Updates were issued yesterday at a ceremony, were family members of the late Sam Bruno, a Sudbury resident who began raising awareness and funds for a PET scan machine before he died of cancer in 2010. A foundation in his name helped raise $3.8 million to make the nearly $9 million project a reality.
OPP numbers roll in 2017
Keeping two hands on the wheel and two eyes on the road is the focus of the latest campaign from the Sudbury OPP. They say this is after the last of 2017’s numbers came in, showing less than ideal results. According to the Greater Sudbury Police Service, officers issued 145 provincial offences in 2017 for use of handheld communication devices while driving. As of early June, officers have issued 180 provincial offences.

Less than two weeks away from the official start of the season, many are thinking about holiday time. The Sudbury airport says they’ve been certainly been seeing a boost in recent years. At the company’s annual general meeting on Wednesday a report was issued saying that the airport has seen a steady increase in passengers since 2016. They are hoping that an updated lounge area will ease traveller wait times.
