North Bay will hold off passing budget until 2021
North Bay council will delay the passing of its 2021 budget until the near year. This is after learn a system glitch on the part of the WSIB has created a more than $800,000 shortfall. Council was prepared to approve a levy of nearly $97 million — an increase of more than $3.1 million or 3.36 per cent. But now, that levy could be just over 4.2 per cent. Council now aims at passing the budget Jan. 12th, 2021.
Cities getting more COVID-19 relief dollars from the Federal, Provencal Governments
Greater Sudbury is getting $1.83 million from the federal and provincial governments to help the municipality deal with COVID-19. The joint funding is aimed at helping Ontario’s municipalities recover from the impacts of COVID-19 faster with the goal offer enter into 2021 without operating deficits from this year.
Meanwhile, Sault Ste. Marie is getting a second phase of COVID-19 restart funding from the provincial government. The city’s allotment is $351,000, according to CAO Malcolm White. It’s all part of the Ontario government’s $695 million allocation designed to provide financial relief for municipalities ahead of the new year.
Rainbow District School Board ink a new deal with ESU union
The Rainbow District School Board have inked a new deal with the union representing the Educational Support Staff Unit. A tentative agreement at the local level it will apply to staff in Greater Sudbury, Espanola and the island. The new deal, if ratified, will be retroactive from Sept. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2022.
Northern College getting capital funding from the Province
Northern College is getting a capital funding boost from the province. Just over $1.86 million in funding has been announced for the Timmins college. The college is receiving $1.59 million through the Facilities Renewal Program, an increase of over $1.32 million from last year.
New cases of COVID-19 in Sudbury and Kirkland Lake
Among news case counts of COVID-19 yesterday into today, Public Health Sudbury & Districts reported three more positive cases of COVID-19. Also… the Timiskaming Health Unit is reporting one new case of COVID-19. According to the health unit, it’s a person in the northern part of the region, which is the Kirkland Lake area.
Frozen pipe blamed for water leak at Hospital
A frozen pipe at Timmins and District Hospital early yesterday is to blame for leaving several inches of water on the floor in the Timmins and District Hospital. It did considerable damage on the main floor, in the x-ray/imaging area and then down into the cafeteria. There were no injures, and no word on repair time.
