One new death and a number of new COVID-19 cases in Northern Ontario

Another individual in Greater Sudbury has passed away due to COVID-19. The case is linked to the outbreak at HSN. No further information is being released.
Meanwhile among new cases…
Algoma Public Health has identified seven confirmed COVID-19 cases associated with a specific multi-unit dwelling. It’s in Elliot Lake. Following an investigation, the health unit has determined that some cases are linked to known person-to-person exposures.
In Greater Sudbury, Laurentian University has confirmed a third case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in one of its residences. The school was alerted to the new case via email this week and the person is self-isolating.
The latest from the North Bay Parry Sound district health unit says 24 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in connection to the Community Outbreak associated with the Skyline – Lancelot Apartments on Lakeshore Drive. All individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and high-risk contacts are required to self-isolate
 

March Break rescheduled for Public Schools in Ontario

The Province of Ontario says the March Break for Public Schools is being postponed until the week of April 12th. Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement yesterday, indicating the hope from the Province is to avoid another increase in COVID-19 cases as seen following the winter break. It has yet to be seen if the Catholic District School boards and the private sector will follow suite.
 

NOHFC launches 4-new programs to aid growth

Four new economic development programs have been launched by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. Focusing on rural communities it comes as a result of a consultation with regional leaders, non-for-profits and businesses for feedback on how to respond to the needs of the North. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says the new programs will address the skills labour shortage, and make it easier for more people and businesses to apply.  The new programs in motion to replace existing programs are: The Community Enhancement Program, The Cultural Supports Program, The Invest North Program, and the People and Talent Program.  For more click here.
 

ONTC reducing buses to and from the GTA.

Ontario Northland is reducing select northern Ontario routes to Toronto including routes out of North Bay. Bus service between North Bay and Toronto, and Sudbury and Toronto, will be reduced as the company responds to a decline in ridership and further support the current provincial Stay-At-Home order. Another extreme cold weather alert in Timmins area

It’s another chilly start for Timmins area residents. Environment Canada says windchills continue to over near minus 40. They are reminding residents that extreme cold puts everyone at risk and that extra care should be taken for young children, older adults, with a chronic illness, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper heat.
 

Driver charged in pedestrian motor vehicle collision

North Bay police say an adult male from North Bay has been charged following a vehicle pedestrian collision. It happened shortly before 10 am Wednesday at Oak and Ferguson streets. Police say the vehicle turned from Oak Street and struck an adult female in the pedestrian crossing of the intersection. The pedestrian received injuries requiring medical attention.
