Pioneer Manor has celebrated a significant construction milestone. The seniors home is expanding, with a new five-storey wing to house 160 beds. The city reps joined Manor staff and residents, along with design and construction personnel, for a ceremonial signing of the final structural beam for the building.

Various events are taking place during Fire Prevention Week, including in North Bay where two ‘Fill-A-Fire Truck’ events support the North Bay Food Bank, including one today at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer on Laurentian Ave.

This week, a “point in time” count of those un-homed in the Cochrane District will be conducted. The count is voluntary and intended to help those in need.

Mountain bikers will soon have another place to pedal in Sault Ste. Marie. The grand opening of the Finn Hill Mountain Bike Trail takes place this Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m.

A unanimous vote of city council members will make it more difficult for people to file complaints against them with the city’s integrity commissioner. As soon as an associated bylaw is amended to reflect the changes city council approved, those who complain against city council members will need to submit an affidavit outlining evidence an elected official has breached the city’s Code of Conduct, as well as provide proof of identification.

North Bay fire crews with some help from a resident quick work of a garage fire on Belleview Crescent just after 7:30 pm yesterday. Fire fighters went in and put out the rest of the fire and checked to make sure it didn’t spread into the home. Nobody was hurt. Everybody got out.

Horizon Timmins Palliative Care Service is marking a notable anniversary. 40 years. The non-profit group offers support to people at end of life and their families.

Do you want the bad news or the good news? The bad news is One new wildfire was reported in Ontario’s Northeast Region Tuesday. The Good news? It’s out. The 0.1 hectare fire was on an island in Lake Temagami, about 0.5 kilometres east of Sand Point. There are eight active wildfires in the region as of Tuesday evening, all of which are being observed.

It doesn’t get any more Canadian than this… A woman in Greater Sudbury, caught on her camera… a black bear going through a dumpster at a Tim Hortons. It happened late last month. Police it’s important to be bear wise… even at a Tim Hortons, even if that means they need to “double double” down on their efforts.

Plans are on track for the proposed events centre in downtown Sudbury. That’s according to the latest report heard by city council this week. The proposed site is currently a collection of parking lots and vacant spaces following the demolition of several buildings.

There’s been an increase in bear sightings in small communities and cities alike. Larger centres include the city of North Bay. Residents are encouraged to be garbage, recycling, apple trees, and bird and/or deer feeders.”

Timmins residents may notice a new strip of pavement at the entrance to Denise Park. The city says it’s a solution the cycling committee came up with to link the park with the entrance to Scout Trail.
