Those interested in voting in the upcoming provincial election by mail have a deadline to watch for. Applications for vote by mail kits, which include a write-in ballot, must be received by Elections Ontario before 6 p.m. on Feb. 21.

A fire in Greater Sudbury forced the temporary closure of historic Coniston inn yesterday. Thankfully the blaze was contained to kitchen area, and tenants able to return to upper-floor units.

North Bay City Council has approved increases in solid waste tipping fees at the Merrick Landfill. After rising to $110 per metric tonne in 2024, tipping fees will jump to $115 effective March 1, and then $118 on January 1, 2026.

An iconic lumberjack “Guy-Paul Treefall” is not getting the ax. Instead a new home, and repairs. The Highway 11 landmark is being repaired and relocated as decided by Iroquois Falls this week. The next steps are selecting the most suitable new location and the logistics of the move.

Sault Ste Marie Police are looking into complaints after hundreds of election signs have gone missing. Thus far they seem limited to one party, and a reminder is being given that the theft of signs, is illegal.

As a major snow storm is peeking over the horizon…. those in Greater Sudbury will have access to a new interactive map on the city website. It reports where streets and sidewalks have most recently been serviced. The hope is to be both helpful and transparent as to services.

Town of Cochrane looking at solar panels for Event Centre. They are for the Tim Horton Events Centre. If they move ahead, the panels could save the town 15 per cent electricity costs.

The Mattawa Fire Department is looking to hire. To that end, an open house is slated for Feb 26th from 5-7pm .

St. Paul Catholic School in Sault Ste Marie has reopened after gas leak was called in yesterday. Thankfully, it was before the lion’s share of folks arrived for the day. There were no injuries. The issue has been repaired.

The township of MANITOWANING on Manitoulin says Assiginack Township has entered a short-term contract with a private company on Manitoulin Island for the plowing of roads. This follows recent resignations from the township public works crew.

Meanwhile, North Bay is clearing off some of its snow banks. It’s all to keep motorists and pedestrians safe. The work is already underway on First and Second Avenues between Cassells and Fisher.

The historic Colonial Inn remains closed following a Feb. 11 fire that caused significant damage to the main floor and kitchen of the 110-year-old structure. It was called in at around 9:20 a.m. yesterday. It started behind one of the grills in the kitchen and got into the wall space. Fortunately, it was located, and extinguished.

The Timmins Victor M. Power Airport has a new master plan stretching into 2042. It will be used as a guiding document for future planning and investment. They’re say they’re doing 300 seats a day to Toronto and back, which for the city population is higher than a lot of regional airports.

Travelling art exhibit based entirely on Legos will be at Sudbury’s Science North this weekend. It’s 100 sculptures-wide built with two million Lego pieces. They’ve been created by a world-renowned artist who uses Lego bricks providing a family friendly event for those looking to square away an afternoon.
