City councils in Timmins and Greater Sudbury are looking at writing off unpaid fines dating back years. Deemed uncollectible, in Sudbury alone, council will vote next week on writing off $519,949.09 in fines deemed uncollectible. The numbers will not affect the budget.

Construction of the new break wall is well underway in Callander’s Centennial Park. Mayor Robb Noon expects the work to be completed by the time FunFest rolls around on June 28.

As co-chair of the all-party steel caucus, MP Terry Sheehan will meet today with Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and the management and union at Tenaris to discuss US tariffs on steel and aluminum. Tomorrow Sheehan and Joly will have a similar discussion in Ottawa with representatives from the unions at Algoma Steel and Michael Garcia, the company’s CEO. This meeting will be through videoconference.

Despite local pushback, speed cameras in Sudbury have proven effective at the latest locations. The city’s six automated speed-enforcement cameras became active at their new locations on Monday, and the city is reporting success in slowing traffic.

Silver Birches Public School in North Bay is celebrating a tree planting partnership with Clean, Green, Beautiful North Bay and local partners. Since 2021, the initiative has brought over 20 tall, thriving trees to the schoolyard. To that end, a tree-planting ceremony takes place today.

Timmins Drivers are being reminded to drive with extra care. Now that the snow is in the rearview mirror, paving has begun on city streets. A three-year, $5-million contract for “shaving and paving” will see 12 to 14 km of roads resurfaced.

As wildfire smoke from the west impacts local air quality, school boards in Sault Ste. Marie and Elliot Lake are keeping students indoors. Environment Canada is anticipating that wildfire smoke may remain in certain areas for several days.
