The Rainbow District School board has released it’s 2025-2026 guide for students and parents. The board expands out from Sudbury to cover Espanola and Manitoulin Island and can be accessed online.

A visible bloom of blue-green algae has been observed in Lake Apsey in Espanola. The health unit is advising residents that the water around the bloom should not be consumed until further notice.

A special weather statement has been issued for several locations, due to strong winds. On the list, Greater Sudbury and vicinity, North Bay & West Nipissing, Elliot Lake, Blind River – Thessalon, Espanola – Killarney and Manitoulin Island. Strong winds with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h are possible.

There were no injuries this week after a passenger plane en route to Sault Ste. Marie was struck by lightning mid-air. That said, Air Canada confirms the aircraft landed safely. It was inbound from Toronto Pearson International. Transport Canada says, in a metal airplane, the crew and passengers are sheltered from the direct effects of an electrical discharge.

A new pilot project will see overnight security guards patrolling the area of the emergency shelter in Timmins. At this week’s meeting, a request was approved for a 30-day trial to have security officers patrol a two-block radius of Living Space from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
