The City of Greater Sudbury celebrated the 25th annual Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day this week. Mayor Paul Lefevbre said it’s important to have more people able to join the workforce if the local economy is to grow.

The city of North Bay will hold an Algonquin Avenue Road Safety Open House next week. Potential solutions, including a pedestrian signal and crossover, were explored but ultimately not recommended due to site conditions and provincial guidelines.

The Timmins and District Hospital’s Foundation has received an $88,000 grant to put towards a Resuscitaire care bed, which supports lifesaving care for newborns.

A former senior leader of a Canadian base metals company is the new chief geologist of a mineral exploration company active north of Sault Ste. Marie. Neil O’Brien previously served as a technical adviser with Sterling Metals before his new appointment.

Greater Sudbury Development Corporation has highlighted recent investments from the city. $1 million from its development fund into organizations like the local airport. It also granted $600,000 to 44 arts groups from its arts and culture grant program, spurring more than $7 million in economic impact. Further, the city invested $3.3 million in tourism projects, including major investments like Science North.

Preliminary enrolment figures from the Near North Board show a reduction of 185 students this year. However, that’s expected to change before an official count later this month. That said, official counts take place on Oct. 31 and March 31 each school year.

Planning continues for a new firehall in Timmins. City council has awarded a contract for design and engineering for the building to replace the current one on Cedar St. S. The entire process and construction is expected to take the next 3-4 years.

Five new hires are being sought by the city of Sault Ste. Marie. They say it is to help with the city’s outdated financial software. The issue is that said software runs the city hall’s financials, budgets, property taxes, HR records, payroll and works management.

Billings Township council members on Manitoulin Island are concerned with what they say is an increase in municipal requisitions with the Ontario Provincial Police cost recovery model. That said, the Solicitor General is promising 11% fee cap.
