
The city has issued specific timelines for specific lots when it comes to downtown parking. The changes are being made to create 185 permanent parking spaces to replace some of the 270 being cordoned off while the downtown event centre takes shape. The event center’s full perimeter will be fenced off as early as Jan. 1.
Flames could be seen along Cedar Heights Road in the north end of the North Bay yesterday. A house fire was called in at a location close to Canadore College. The fire started at around 6:40 this evening, and everybody got out of the house safely.
The Timmins Police Service is asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 44-year-old Indigenous woman. Karen is described as about five foot six and roughly 170 pounds, with short black hair that may appear unkempt, and brown eyes. Police say she was last seen wearing a black jacket, green camouflage pants and a black tuque.
Sault Ste. Marie taxpayers might get a break come 2027. The Police Service is asking for an 11 per cent boost to its budget for the coming year. That’s an extra $4.3 million for 2026, bringing the total ask to $44 million, allowing it to drop the following year.
Confederation College and Collège Boréal have signed a five-year partnership agreement. It is to jointly deliver the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) program in Northeastern Ontario. The program will help fill a gap Cambrian College left in August 2024, when they cancelled their Advanced Care Paramedic program, triggering local concerns in filling needs.
Serpent River has a new chief. James Owl has been chosen following an election for chief and council. Owl handily defeated incumbent chief Wilma-Lee Johnston, receiving 343 votes out of 435 ballots cast.
The Bunker Military Museum in Cobalt has been given a two-year lease. It’s all to continue operating at its present location.
A Sudbury doctor is the Ontario College of Family Physicians’ Family Physician of the Year for the Northeast. Tom Chrichton has taken the much-deserved peer-nominated award that honors his decades of patient care, leadership and dedication.
Batten down the hatches… a Winter Storm is heading to parts of Northern Ontario, and it’s bullseye is the Timmins area Cochrane. Caught up in the mess will be Iroquois, Kirkland Lake – Englehart, Kapuskasing – Smooth Rock Falls, and surrounding areas. Heavy snow and blowing snow is expected amounting to 15 to 30 cm.
Samuel de Champlain Park has received a boost from the provincial government to the tune of $4.74 million. It’s all to rebuild and upgrade the park to turn it into an all-season destination. That said, improvements won’t be completed in time for next summer, meaning the park will remain closed for another season.
