Drivers are thanked for their patience, as preparation work has begun at the Junction East site in Greater Sudbury. Emergency scenarios went off without a hitch yesterday at the Jack Garland Airport in North Bay, with Emergency crews working in tandem with the airport staff. Researchers from Algoma University’s School of Business and Economics are conducting community-based action research that focuses on the economic development surrounding the nexus of the upper Great Lakes. The Near North District School Board reports a successful summer learning program with more than 60 staff hired to provide education to over 575 students. The Schumacher Community Library Project will mark its 110th anniversary with 10 book boxes built by Timmins High and Vocational School students and installed later this fall. A recent population census indicates a slight increase in the Indigenous population in Sault Ste Marie, climbing from 12.4 percent to 13.1 percent from 2016 to 2022. And from the good news file, fire trucks will be out in neighbourhoods across Timmins and South Porcupine food banks collecting food items for those in need. To help residents get informed for the Oct. 24 Municipal Election, the Rotary Club of Elliot Lake will host an All Candidates Meeting at the Collins Hall, at 120 Hillside Driver North, on Tuesday, October 4. At least three public mayoral debates are scheduled in Greater Sudbury starting with a “Meet the Mayoral Candidates” event on Oct. 1 at The ParkSide Older Adult Centre. According to Stats Canada, North Bay’s Indigenous population increased slightly in the past five years, up 1.75 percent compared to the 2016 Census. The mining conference at Science North made youth a priority this week, as the Mine Operators and Maintenance Engineers conference, hosted by the Sudbury branch of CIM brought in students from a number of high schools. Info on licenced childcare options in the municipality will be the subject of an information session for East Ferris residents set for Monday at the East Ferris Community Centre. As Parliament resumed this week, Timmins-James Bay’s MP Charlie Angus says on his priority list was a national dental care plan. First responders were at a traffic incident near Korah Collegiate Thursday this morning at around 8:30 in the Soo, with no word on the cause, nor injuries.
