New intersection lights in Sudbury

A note to Sudbury city drivers heading out this morning. The city has installed new traffic signals at the intersection of Scarlet Road and Second Avenue. The city says the Second Avenue Infrastructure improvement, while a hassle to some… is intended to increase traffic safety for drivers and pedestrians. Residents are asked to be alert and cautious when proceeding through the intersection.



East Ferris takes NPSB to court

The Municipality of East Ferris has taken the Nipissing Parry Sound Catholic District School Board to court. The claim relates to an alleged heating oil spill from underground storage tanks at the former St. Theresa School on Corbeil Road back discovered in 2012 when the school was taken down. The near $623,000 lawsuit will be in court Oct. 17.



27-year-old pulled over for impaired driving

A 27-year-old Sault Ste. Marie driver was charged after being stopped at a RIDE check on Second Line West. It was all part of the Operation Impact campaign where Police say they were looking for those either impaired, those who had failed to buckle up, or distracted behind the wheel.



Jaw-bone investigation continue

Further examination is needed when determining the identity of human remains recently found in Greater Sudbury. This pertains to a lower jawbone was discovered on October 1 in an open field adjacent to Sunrise Ridge Estates. Thus far, a forensic pathologist and professor of forensic science at Laurentian University, said Sudbury’s acidic soil from decades of mining may have altered the bone’s condition. In addition, it may have come in with a load of fill, was dumped in the neighbourhood years ago. A search remains underway to find out where the fill came from to see if more remains can be located.



New sidewalk coming to bus stop

North Bay Drivers are being told of a lane closure today, but it’s all for a cultically needed sidewalk. This is all in the 800 block of McKeown Ave. where there is no sidewalk, and consequentially, snow was permitted to build up. The City says construction plans have begun, and a lane closure for eastbound traffic in this area and delays should be expected.



College Faculty on strike Monday?

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union has given says that college teachers could be on the picket line as early as Monday. Those representing schools which include Cambrian, Canadore, Northern College, Sault College and College Boreal, were back at the negotiating table on Tuesday, but a release from the CEC late Tuesday stated the union “rejected the colleges’ final offer of settlement.”



45-year-old facing 20 charges

Sault Ste. Marie Police say they’ve taken a 45-year-old into custody. Arrested is a 45 year old of Shingwawk Street, wanted in relation to a home invasion. Constable Sonny Spina spoke to KFM…

He is facing twenty charges, including one count of break and enter and one count of robbery with a firearm.



Timmins school fail water/lead test

A Timmins school is on a now on the list of hundreds of institutions province wide that have failed tests for lead in standing water. Golden Avenue Public School now joins two catholic counterparts in Smooth Rock Falls and Kapuskasing. The numbers say that as many as 640 schools have failed to meet the provincial standard of 10 parts per billion in the past two years.
