City Re-zoning of Kingsway Approved

Greater Sudbury city Councillors voted in favor yesterday when it comes to the rezoning necessary for the Kingsway Entertainment District. This is the culmination of almost three years of discussion and debate all to see the city’s new $100 million public arena built on property on the Kingsway, alongside a $60 million casino and hotel. A number of groups are planning on appealing the decision.
 

Private land sought for new arena

In North Bay an appointed committee says they’re putting the word out to the private sector, when it comes to a possible site for a new arena to replace the old Sam Jacks arena in Ferris. The present recommendation is the Steve Omischl Sports Complex at the city’s south end. Potential sellers have until 1 p.m. Wednesday April 25.
 

Timmins tax levy approved at 1.58 drop

Residents in Timmins now have set rates for a tax levy increase for city bills. Timmins City Council has approved to lower the residential tax rate by 1.58 per cent. This means that for a home assessed at $180,000… a rough $26 increase can be expected.
 

New zoning coming for snow dumping

City officials in Sault Ste. Marie say they’re looking at creating a new zoning classification for private snow dumps. Currently, the city requires many property owners to haul away significant piles of snow to any rural part of the city. The move would be to ensure that harmful substances aren’t carried off with the snow, left to drain into rivers and lakes.
 

New plan approved for Sault Ste. Marie Transit

Sault Ste. Marie City Council says they’ve approved a plan designed to improve public transit across the city. The plan includes reducing transfers and providing more direct service uptown and return Sunday service. The city embarked upon a transit optimization study last year to evaluate and improve all regular and community bus routes.
 

Door-to-door scam being warned of in Sudbury

Greater Sudbury Residents are reminded to be cautions of giving out cash, following word of a door to door scam. Maison McCulloch Hospice has sent out a notice warning the community of individuals misrepresenting themselves as hospice fundraisers. The RBC Hike for Hospice is taking place May 6 and pledge forms are circulating in the community.
