Job loss from privatization – Unifor
Gateway Casinos Sudbury says that seven of its 40 unionized workers will be laid off at Sudbury Downs. So far Unifor, the group that represents the group, has responded in a news release, saying that job loss is the direct result of privatization in Ontario gaming operations. There are roughly 150 employees in total.
Charges dismissed in worker’s death
Charges against three Detour Gold employees in the Timmins area have been dismissed. This is all in connection with the cyanide poisoning death of another employee, but now it’s being said that it’s simply taken too long for the accused persons to go to trial. The case revolved around the death of 52-year-old Denis Millette, a millwright, who died June 5, 2015 from acute cyanide intoxication.
Theatre Cambrian President steps down
The president of Theatre Cambrian’s board of directors has stepped down. Chris Nash told reporters this week, that while the group is receiving a cash bailout from city council, the organization is in such poor financial shape, she’s not convinced they will survive. Last month, Greater Sudbury city council agreed to consider providing a 150k bailout for Theatre Cambrian, the latest arts group forced to head to the city cap in hand looking for money.
School board’s budget passes
The Algoma District School Board’s budget for the upcoming fall has passed. The $159.1-million budget for 2018-2019 includes new provincial cash to help Grade 7 and 8 students successfully transition to high school.
Question of road salt usage raised
While winter is a distant memory with Summer starting up, Timmins city council is now faced with it once again, when it comes to spending. More specifically, they are being encouraged to spend less when it comes to salting the roads each year, while finding newer and better ways to keep the winter roads safe. That’s according to the manager of public works would says he’d like to see and updated salt policy to ensure that salt is applied only when and where it it’s needed. Currently the city spends aprox $650,000 on road salt each year.
Also: No charges, following fatal collision
The investigation continues when it comes to a fatal collision in Greater Sudbury. This is after the Garson man was struck and killed on Monday. Police indicate that not only was the photo of the dump truck in question, the wrong truck… they now say that the driver of the truck allegedly involved may have been completely unaware of the collision. The investigation is continuing, but at this time, no charges will be laid.
