Heat wave returns to the North East

Environment Canada says that as many step out the door this morning, the heat and humidity have already gotten a jump on the work week. Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, and Sault Ste. Marie can all expect the return of daytime temperatures will be near 30 degrees again today, before the humidity. The latest blast is expected to last until Friday.
 

Two Sudbury woman rescued through GPS coordinates

While many were out enjoying the weather and water over the weekend, at least two Sudbury women had an expected adventure, that involved the authorities. Police responded to a call by two women, near Vermillion River. The two were, evidently, out on their floating devices on the river, north-east of Dowling when they went to shore and were reportedly disoriented and lost. GPS co-ordinates from their cell-phone were used to determine their location.
 

Timmins area fire continues to burn

A forest fire about 25 kilometres northwest of Timmins has grown from five hectares to 70 hectares in the last two days. It is located south of Byers Lake. Reports indicate that there are some homes and camps within seven to 10 kilometres of the fire, however, nobody has been told to evacuate or leave their property. At least 5 crews remain on scene.
 

Possible drowning victim pulled from Sturgeon River

Tragedy struck over the long weekend, and the investigation is ongoing, after the OPP recovered a deceased man from Sturgeon River. The call came in regarding a possible drowning on the river at about at around 3:00pm Sunday. According to reports a 57-year-old was observed sitting in a chair on a raft, and fell into the river when the chair broke.
 

$1.6 m in renovations expected for Science North

Renovations are expected for parts of Science North, as early as this year. Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre has announced a FedNor grant of over $1.6 million for the science centre. They money will be used to modernize the fourth floor of the facility which focuses on the human body, and human interaction.
 

Soo worker injured, Toronto Company fined

Toronto company has been fined after Sault Ste. Marie worker suffered critical injuries in a work place accident. This is after the worker was shocked by electricity while changing a 347-volt fluorescent lighting ballast. The worker was treated for injuries. CBRE Limited was fined $80,000.
