Greater Sudbury feeling the economic impact of COVID-19

The Greater Sudbury economy has certainly felt the economic punch of COVID-19. The Nickle city lost 3,400 jobs in May and more than 9,000 since February. Statistics Canada says Many of Sudbury’s major employers, such as Vale, Glencore, and HSN have continued to operate during the COVID-19 crisis.
 

415 new cases of COVID-19 in Ontario

Public Health Ontario is again noting previously unreported cases of COVID-19 in today’s update. The agency has reported 192 new cases of COVID-19 plus 223 cases that “were impacted by a laboratory-to-public health reporting delay.” Overall, the total cases confirmed in the province rose by 415.
 

Acid spill closes a number of Greater Sudbury roads

It was quite the clean up in Greater Sudbury into the weekend. Several roadways from Falconbridge to Lively were closed after a tanker truck started leaking sulphuric acid. There was never any threat to the public and the roadways have reopened.
 

North Bay site of march with 2,000 people

Close to 2,000 people marched together in North Bay Saturday. It was all to raise awareness of and racial equality following similar peaceful events in the US. A similar event happened in outside Algoma University, with at least 500 locals.
 

North Bay OPP looking for car and driver

North Bay OPP is looking for a 2002 red Chevrolet Blazer following an incident in Mattawa. It began when officers tried to speak to the driver who fled the scene eastbound on highway 17 but not before striking an OPP cruiser. Further details on the car and driver are on our website.
Police say the Blazer has Alberta marker CGD4615 and has damage to the driver’s side and a broken driver’s side window. The driver is described as being a white male, approximately 35-45 years old, 5’8″ to 6′ and 130 lbs with red hair, brown eyes with a scar on the palm of his left hand.
 

Timmins city hall reopening to property tax, water bills

After being completely closed to the public for nearly three months, Timmins city hall is partially re-opening. It will be open for limited services only in two days on June 10. Residents will be permitted to enter city hall to make property tax payments or water bill payments or to make inquiries regarding those respective billings.

Plastic bag ban coming for Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste Marie City Council is looking at a proposed municipal ban on single-use plastic bags. It is one of two environmental issues being discussed at city council this week. Back in January, a motion was put in place, calling for either an outright ban or reduced use of plastic bags.
