
New warming huts have opened for snowmobilers on Sudbury area trails. Five in total, built with wood and steel, by volunteers. Structure are also designated along a trail in the Killarney area and will be supplied with firewood so snowmobilers can warm up.
Police are thanking a driver with a sharp eye after tractor-trailer lost a wheel on Thibeault Hill along highway 11. North Bay OPP responded, and a 25-year-old driver from Alberta, along with the operating company have been spoken to. There were no injuries.
Timmins Police are warning local business owners to watch out for scammers posing as legitimate vendors. In scam emails, individuals posing as vendors request payment or banking information changes. Police say it’s all a scam and hit delete.
Anglers gear up for the 2026 Elliot Lake Ice Fishing Derby This year marks year 17 for this event, and it set to take place on Feb. 14 at Horne Lake. With a limited number of spots available, anglers are encouraged to register early to secure their spot on the ice.
Construction workers are making progress on a new Algoma University building. The $45-million structure is on track for completion by early 2027, with extensive structural work carried out since the groundbreaking ceremony which took place last summer.
A New Clean Energy Hydro-Turbine Project Information Session is taking place in one week’s time. It’s in partnership with Temiskaming First Nation and the Temiskaming community over a proposed clean energy micro hydro-turbine project at Pete’s Dam.
Classes at Laurentian University will resume Feb. 23, two weeks after the end of a strike by faculty members. The semester will still end by April 30, as planned. That said, instead of a formal exam period, exams are, for the most part, to be held in classrooms by professors during the last week of class.
The North Bay Snowmobile Club has driving out concerns over trespassing on the local snowmobile trails. In short, trails are getting damaged and that could hinder access to the A/D Trail in the future. Seen as a major artery in the city residents, while well meaning are asked to stay clear.
The area has a cold weather alert in effect. The mercury’s expected to drop overnight to -20 C with the windchill. The cold-weather alert threshold is -20 C, including wind chill. This is a five-degree change from the previous threshold of -25 C, which has now opened addition community resources.
Starting in sports, the Sault Surge has finished second at a Ontario North Eastern meet. Dave Kensit Memorial Northeastern Ontario Region championships at the John Rhodes Community Centre Pool saw 256 athletes representing 12 clubs throughout the region with 49 local athletes representing the Soo.

This closure is to allow for the setup and running of the Elliot Lake Fishing Derby. While the municipality apologizes for any inconvenience, they are encouraging residents to get involved.
