Cambrian College expecting a decrease in enrollment

Cambrian College in Greater Sudbury getting ready for the school year… prepping for a thousand empty seats. The college says it will likely have 4,000 students this year instead of 5,000. The college’s vice president of academic, says fewer students is all tied to the ongoing pandemic. Thus far, just over 3,300 students have enrolled so far.
 

Police catch speeder going 170km on highway-17

Police have charged a speeding Sudbury motorcyclist after quite the chase. This is after the 18-year-old he failed to pull over for Police, after being clocked in excess of 170 km/hr on Highway 17 in the Verner area. He instead fled into the bush where he was later located and arrested with help from the members of the canine unit and emergency response team, along with a drone. His identity has not been released.
 

Parking garage in North Bay closed until October

Some in North Bay are looking for alternative parking this morning, as the McIntyre Street Parking Garage is closed and will be closed until late October. It’s all to complete structural and waterproofing repairs to the parking facility. City council has approved awarding a contract worth nearly $465 thousand dollars.
 

Two new fires reported in the North East

Two new forest fires were reported in the northeast region. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Kirkland Lake 11 is 0.1 ha in size and is listed as under control. The other fire is in Wawa. Meanwhile, North Bay 36, first reported mid-Aug. remains under observation 0.4 ha.
 

Missing: 75-year-old Sarah Gibson

The search continues for a missing Sault Ste Marie Woman. 75-year-old Sarah Gibson. Police first requested assistance from the public on Aug. 20 about the missing Sault Ste. Marie woman. Gibson was to travel from her island cottage to Manitoba to attend a family reunion. She didn’t show up. Gibson is described as being 5’8 tall with wavy, collar-length brown hair, hazel eyes and she wears glasses.
 

Construction continues as per normal in Sudbury

A new report from the city of Greater Sudbury indicates, planned construction has not slowed during the pandemic, but perhaps… just prioritized over the past 5 – 6 months. The director of Engineering services says right from the start, municipal construction was deemed an essential service. Thus far this year, $19 million is being spent on bridges throughout the city, including the Spanish River Bridge, the Coniston Creek Pedestrian Bridge, and the Martindale Bridge.

Air quality checks being done in Soo area Schools

Algoma District School Board is assessing the air quality of its schools before students return to class. The review is more than 75 per cent complete. This is all according to a report from the superintendent of business Joe Santa Maria, at the latest meeting ahead of September 8th.
 

Timmins welcomes a new VP

There’s a new vice principal in Timmins. The Northeastern District Catholic School Board (NCDSB) has announced Sean Robertson is now the vice principal at Pope Francis Elementary School. Robertson is working on his Doctor of Education through the University of Western Ontario. He is an active member of a local church and is a Knights of Columbus council member.
