New cases of COVID-19 linked to two Secondary Schools

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says among the case counts this weekend, one new case of COVID-19 has been tied to the community at Chippewa Secondary School. The Health Unit stated says the individual is a close contact of another positive COVID-19 case in the district and there is no evidence to suggest that this case was exposed at school. At this time there is no outbreak at the school.

One new COVID-19 case is being reported in Timmins. District School Board Ontario North East confirmed the case in the community of Roland Michener Secondary School. According to the Porcupine Health Unit, the exposure is under investigation. One class at the school is in isolation. The school is open.
 

More cancellations for school buses in Greater Sudbury

The Sudbury School Bus Consortium says three complete school bus routes and three partial school bus routes have been cancelled for this week. COVID-19 has greatly impacted the local school bus operator as many of their drivers have decided not to return behind the wheel.
 

An inmate at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre

An inmate at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre has tested positive for COVID-19. Test results were received early Sunday morning as part of an ongoing testing program for recently-admitted offenders. Contact tracing will be completed with the assistance of Algoma Public Health.
 

Mattheson OPP investigate fatal collision

Matheson OPP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 south of Ramore. Highway 11 was closed for a time allowing police to investigate. The investigation is still on-going.
 

Greater Sudbury council looking at the coming winter season

A COVID-19 update for Greater Sudbury will be coming to city council this week. This is as the nickel city prepares for the upcoming winter season. Staff are still in the process of consulting with public health officials as the decision is made whether to open ski hills and skating rinks.

Those with the 2020 Coats for Kids campaign in Sault Ste Marie, says they’re hanging up operations for this coming year. In a release issued over the weekend, the committee announced the decision to cancel the event until 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic, but promise residents, they remain dedicated to helping those in need.

Scientists in Sudbury say new funding may be able to help them test for COVID-19 in wastewater. The research project, now with $50,000 in hand will be able to purchase a small sequencer that can fit in the palm of the hand — and will give out results in just a few hours. HSN’s research institute says the hope that that the information collected can help determine if there are hot spots in the city.
 

Powassan home significantly damaged in fire

A fire Saturday in Powassan left a family home significantly damaged. Powassan Fire Chief Bill Box says firefighters were called to the structure fire just after 11:30pm Saturday and were on scene until 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Located on Main Street the home’s fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Although the homeowners were home at the time of the fire, the fire department is reporting no injuries.
