HSN is opening 40-new-beds ahead of flu season

Health Sciences North is creating at least 40 new hospital beds in 2021. They will be opening at the Daffodil Lodge Terrace early next year. HSN said creating the new beds is the hospital’s response to the chronic overcrowding made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic and in anticipation of the flu season, which usually peaks in February.
 

4-new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Manitoulin District

Another four new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Manitoulin District. One of the exposure category is listed as close contact of a confirmed case, while the other three are listed as information pending or missing.
Meanwhile a new COVID-19 case has been reported by the Timiskaming Health Unit. According to the health unit, it is a person in the south part of the district. The individual is recovering at home. The case is presently under investigation.
 

Members of 22 Wing/CFB collection for Food Bank

If you are driving on Airport Road in North Bay, near the Air Defense Park, you can expect delays. Until 9am, Members of 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay and community volunteers will be collecting non-perishable food items on behalf of My Team Cares in support of the North Bay Food Bank.
 

$28.2-million-dollar twin pad arena approved for Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste. Marie City Council has tonight approved replacing the W. J. McMeeken Centre with a new $28.2-million twin-pad arena. The vote was eight-to-three. The 85,000-square-foot arena will have two National Hockey League-sized rinks. City staff estimated a minimal investment of $2.4 million would have been needed to keep the McMeeken Centre going over the next five years.
 

No Parachute team for 2021, due to COVID-19

Regardless of what 2021 will bring, the Canadian Armed Forces has cancelled the 2021 parachute team performance for the year. The SkyHawks and Snowbirds have made numerous performances in North Bay over the years, most notably on Armed Forces Day. Team members are selected early in the year and undergo extensive training.
 

PUC increases water rate for 2021 by 2.5% per month

PUC Services will increase water rates in 2021. It’s running up by 2.5 per cent, which works out to $1.03 per month for the average residential customer. This increase is significantly lower than the 6.5 per cent increase originally anticipated by PUC.

No injuries, no cause given for two-fires in Greater Sudbury

Thankfully no one was injured following two fires yesterday in Greater Sudbury. The first happened at the South End Canadian Tire involving a cardboard dumpster. There is no risk to the store or personnel. The second was at a home on King Street. He fire was quickly brought under control and smoke was ventilated.
 

Elliot Lake OPP looking for donation jar thief

East Algoma OPP is asking for the public’s help in recovering a donation jar. It was stolen from a gas station on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake on December 2nd. The thief is described as looking like a male, approximately 5’8″ tall, medium build, wearing a camo FXR jacket, blue bicycle helmet, and was riding a red/maroon E-bike.
